Says here this brigade of the central theatre command received "new electronic equipment" in 2019 and it became a "trump card" of the brigade. J-11BG in the pic? Any idea which brigade?

Says also the same unit as “空中神炮手”刘焕刚, so my guess is the 19th brigade received J-11BG upgrades in 2019?

What is the purpose of the metal tubing right on top of front pilot ??? It's a blind rigging for instrument flying during day ?

Yes. The trainee has zero external visual visibility but the instructor has full normal views. Good training for nighttime instrument navigation while massively reducing the risks.

Also a good way to test pilots on their instrument navigation skills as part of qualifications.

Once the pilots have fully mastered instrument only fight and navigation, actual night flying is much easier.

The only downside is that such training cannot be a full substitute for night time flight training and ops, and need to be used in conjunction with and leading up to full night time flying, least it inadvertently promotes bad habits like focusing only on your instruments and neglecting frequent all round visual checks.

Seems to be a case of "形式主义" that pervades Chinese journalism.

I would agree, since only those Flankers from the 19th have these typical red stripes



... and indeed, there was a rumour already in August the 19th got J-11BGs.

I wonder if anyone has done a systematic sorting of PLAAF/PLANAF's stripe paintings? Seems like a trend that caught on and would be a great help to identifying units.

Su-30MKK's radar. I don't recall a photo of the radar has ever been released before (by China). Maybe retirement time is quickly approaching?
