Perhaps it's the fact that first two photos show the J-16 carrying the KD-88.

Probably a manufacturer's test.

We've seen pictures and videos of a large variety of air to ground munitions and missiles being launched from various fixed wing combat aircraft over the years, but few if any of those have entered service to our knowledge.

I expect this to be similar.

Agreed. It’s the J-11D radar testbed from CFTE carrying an LS-6 and a CM-400AKG under the wings.
