Just in case anyone is wondering, at least one Flanker with Taihang engine made it to the parade:

Did it fall out of the sky?

Kissing cousins to the F-14, F-15 class of aircraft, and they are classy each of them, but these J-11Bs are likely the prettiest Flankers, I'm torn because I like the Navalized J-15, with that little hooky thang??? this class of aircraft will likely never be matched in just raw power and sheer beauty again, L/O does take a little bit of that "chick" coolness away, but the T-50 is Gorgeous, the J-20 is pretty, and the Raptor is stinkin awesome!

Very rarely do we see J-11B Taihang engine in afterburner.

Not sure why you would say that, prolly in burner on every take-off, but most certainly with a load??? The Taihang might make more thrust, but I doubt it would exceed 5% maybe 10%, but prolly doubtful on the latter???

folks talk about the "blue flame" of the burner, but even the AL-31Fs prolly have the more efficient fuel controllers, that turn the heat up on the mixture.

Really I haven't figured out the reason why. There aren't many pictures of the J-11Bs with Taihang engines. These pictures are either always at an angle that you can't really see the afterburner or they at the right angle but without the afterburner turned on.

Yes, that is correct. And now one of the J-11B in that regiment is fitted with WS-10A. Don't know if it's just for show, or J-11B AL-31Fs are starting to be replaced by the WS-10A.

No, this WS-10A-powered Flanker is not a single seater J-11B but one of the few J-11BS twin-seaters within the 1. Division. That's - even if I think a maintenance nightmare to operate two different engines within one regiment - a more and more common sight on several standard or "old" Flanker regiments to supplement their own Su-27UBKs.

Out of interest, has that J-11B been equiped with WS-10A from the start?
