The 5th prototype going back to test trench-style exhausts with DSI intakes is strange. I would have thought they'd eliminated the trench-style exhausts after the 2nd/3rd/4th prototypes all ditched them. If there was a time to test trench+DSI, it would have been the 3rd prototype (after the 2nd tested 2D TVC + DSI). Hopefully we won't see Caret-style intakes return, as much as I like them aesthetically.

Its possible the programme isn't as far along as we think if they're still testing major changes like this, or perhaps they're testing for a new variant.

I would be cautious in assuming the exhausts are the exact same as in prototype 1 -- specifically, I would hesitate to call them "going back to". It may well be a new configuration of a trench style exhaust, or something else entirely.

As for the changes in the aircraft between prototypes; I read it as they have specific parts of the aircraft that are well circumscribed that they're willing to try different things for (given the project itself is somewhat unprecedented), but the rest of the aircraft should be proceeding along a common line of development and progress.

I don't think we've ever gotten confirmation on the number of prototypes. There's been many rumors but no serial numbers or other decisive details. e.g. if we've had photos showing 36011, 36012, 36013, 36014 with the latter 3 all being DSI+TVC, then what you're saying would be true, having 3 prototypes with the same config then reverting part of it on the 5th one would be strange indeed.

As it stands we can only be sure that there's at least one aircraft with CARET and trench exhaust and at least one aircraft with DSI and TVC. For all we know this may actually be the 3rd prototype, which would make the changes in config make more sense imo.

I agree with this as well, we've seen influencers hype things up before

Best they can do is show subsystems like internal structure for broadband stealth as part of a static display.

I'd wager that if the LRIP units can start rolling out of the production lines by 2027, then perhaps we might see them doing a flying display without landing at the Zhuhai 2028 Expo (just like the J-35A back in 2024), followed by an official flyover at Tiananmen on the 80th birthday of the PRC.

As I understand it, the grapevine seem fairly confident that at least three prototypes, possibly four prototypes have already flown.

I wouldn't use serials to try and determine anything -- we only had clear pics of the first prototype seeing 36011, and no serials of the other aircraft to date, and the only way we've been able to identify the second prototype from the first is in its visual changes of DSI, landing gear and exhausts.

If we accept that serials are no longer something we are entitled to, we are basically left to go with what the online pipeline says.

I somewhat disagree with this.

If they were making extensive changes to the overall airframe between multiple prototypes it would be odd, but if they are making specific well circumscribed changes which doesn't effect the rest of the aircraft then it is somewhat sensible.
We forget that things like exhausts are actually a subsystem in their own right, and iterating on subsystem specifics is not out of the ordinary for an EMD phase program.

More importantly, given the ambition of this aircraft overall, it probably makes sense to verify key subsystem alternatives, not only for the purpose of choosing the best one in a real world setting but also in gathering real world data beyond a wind tunnel.

Crosshairs also claims here that it will be shown publicly for the first time at the 2026 Zhuhai airshow, which we all know is not going to happen.
You never know, perhaps this might explain the rumoured tightened restrictions on foreigners and photographing, maybe they could get the first prototype to do a flyby.
