At least one of the airframes (probably the first) was seen on satellite out in Western china as part of its test program; unless there's a reason for it to return to Chengdu or for all four (if there are four) prototypes to fly together, I can't see this happening.

Besides, a four ship flight would just be a flex rather than useful for test purposes.

And there proberbly few more full sized prototype that isn't shown to the public to test structure failure,metal fatigue, stuff like that.
There is also sensor emission that need to be tested in a anechoic chamber.
I wouldn't be suprized that in total we would get about 10 prototypes, 6th gen is a major paradigm shift, one on par with the introduction of BVR.
What suprised me is the speed of this program, especially consider it's running in parallel to other major R&D programs,The ShenYang 6th gen, the H20,the Y30, you only get so much money and engineers , I am suprised that even for a country the size of China has the resources to run all of this at the same time.

Well, 1950s Murica ran even more programmes (along with nuclear weapons and rockets) simultaneously. It was during the height of the country’s industrial prowess. But the cost was a lot more peacetime pilot deaths, particularly due to accidents resulted from flawed designs like the F-104.

during Cold War both USA/USSR had multiple design institutes and those institutes were running different programs in parallel.

i am not exaggerating, what you are seeing is just peanuts and our potential is much more than that. our provinces compete with each other. look at the number of engineers each year graduate from universities. look at the number of patents and scientific research papers. steel/aluminum/composite material production.
