The weird part is prototype 1 without TVC seems pretty manoeuvrable.

Unfortunately (IMO in terms of aesthetics), the only relevant metric in military designs is whether something is sufficient. However surprisingly maneuverable (or not) the embedded exhausts on Prototype #1 were, they may not have been sufficient for the platform's purpose.

Ah yes , I like how the PLA announcment of the next gen fighter program is just fly the big girl over down town Chengdu instead of making an press conference with printed out powerpoint on a borad.
Real subtle.
But somehow China flying two actual prototypes is deceptive propaganda efforts making it look strong but the U.S. making a literal show and tell over incomplete PPT slides/oil painting is maintaining secrecy/being modest.
