It could definitely thrust vector but uses a different principle than 2D TVC nozzles.

Forgive this weird question but, if and when they do some sort of upgrades for older base J-20s; what happens to the "legacy" systems that are then taken out? Surely they're still useful, no?
Base J-20 are very hard to upgrade. In one of the podcasts Yankee claimed that PLAAF top brass expressed dissatisfaction that some of the components between J-20 AL-31 and J-20 WS-10 are not interchangeable. I think that a full upgrade to J-20A level is gonna be difficult.
This is why you see baseline J-20 from the 9th getting sent to WTC where air defense pressure is lower rather than them getting rehauled.

Makes sense, they're still very capable 5th gen aircraft even if they aren't the latest and greatest. Considering what I've heard about the J-10Cs alone, a base J-20 should be pretty damn advanced still. Still, I do wonder what happens to the older subsystems in general if they do get upgraded. I suppose "transplanting" them into an entirely different class of jets is out of the question, isn't it?
Probably not worse the effort to transplant them. Later batch J-16 has way more advanced radar/avionics than first batch J-20, for instance.
