The caret intakes always seemed a bit "conservative" to me and didn't look in keeping with the rest of the aircraft.
Their new configuration is much more consistent and aggressive as well from an aesthetic pov.
Along with the three engine layout (with two "stingers" between them), this aircraft has much more of a "sci fi future fighter" look than prototype 1, and overall more refined.

The pointy F-22/J-XDS style exhausts definitely look a lot better than whatever it had before, but my goodness why DSI... I mean I know why but, it just looks so much worse than caret. Also I was highkey hoping they'd get rid of the hump, but it definitely still has 3 engines. In that case I hope they make the dorsal intake back-sweeping and more angular instead of a humpback. I honestly wouldn't mind a sharp triangular dorsal intake like in one of the J-XDS intake patents
In fact, I'd say 2D TVC nozzles instead of burried exhaust is far more conservative with this prototype. Baffling choice
was thinking about diverting air from the 2 side intakes to the middle engine but then they'd need to figure out how to make the airflow balanced across all 3 engines
I don't care what anyone says carets and pointy TVC nozzles will forever be the peak of aviation aesthetics. The F-22 just has the sauce man
I'm with Blitzo on this one. The DSI in this particular angle looks so pleasing compared to the caret intakes.
