What fascinates me about the design is the decision to use DSI for the top intake, but traditional claret intakes for the lower pair.

I think that if we can puzzle out the reason for this choice, it might yield a lot of additional insight into the CHADs design choices, which in turn will give us a lot of insight into how it’s intended to be used.

My theory is that the CHAD is designed for sustained high supercruise flight and long range/endurance, with traditional diverter intakes giving it more optimisation options compared to a DSI for both speed and fuel economy. The much bigger size of the plane will also make the fixed additional weight cost from the traditional intakes a much smaller proportional hit than smaller planes.

The choice of DSI at the top is probably driven principally by the much more compact design of the DSI, to allow maximum internal space for the weapons bay and fuel tanks.

Also, I would not be surprised if there are some clever aerodynamics going on with the canopy and DSI, where the canopy might actually function as a vortex generator designed to help feed the DSI at certain flight regimes for maximum efficiency and potentially give the DSI at least two sweet spots for optimal efficiency.
