EMBRAER SECURES POTENTIAL KC-390 ORDER FROM SKYTECH

KC-390-01-Embraer-692x360.jpg

Embraer Defense & Security announced that it signed a letter-of-intent (LOI) with the privately-owned aviation company SkyTech for the sale of six Embraer KC-390 multi-mission transport aircraft. The LOI was signed on 05 February at the Singapore Airshow.

, Embraer explains that the KC-390s will be “earmarked for multiple defense projects.”

SkyTech is a partnership between HiFly, a Portugal-based ACMI (aircraft, complete crew, maintenance, and insurance) company and Abagold Aviation, an aviation services and charter firm from Australia.

Lauding the LOI, SkyTech President Paulo Mirpuri stated, “We have been following the KC-390 program since its inception and believe that it will be a game-changer in the medium-sized airlift category as well as a multi-role platform.”

This LOI joins earlier negotiations with Portugal for six KC-390s to replace its C-130Hs.

The Embraer KC-390 is being positioned as a next-generation successor to legacy transport aircraft, such as the Lockheed Martin C-130B/E and Antonov An-12 and An-32 aircraft. Embraer envisages a market of 700-plus legacy aircraft in need of replacing, it hopes to generate $1.5 billion US a year in sales.

The KC-390 is a twin-engine jet-powered aircraft capable of ferrying 23 tons to a range of 2,815 km. It uses two International Aero Engines (IAE) V2500-E5 turbofan engines, which Embraer claims provide the KC-390 with the lowest life-cycle costs in the military transport aircraft market.

The V2500-E5 is an ubiquitous commercial airliner engine, powering the Airbus A320.

It is also capable of serving as an in-flight refueling (IFR) tanker. Using Cobham’s Wing Air Refueling Pods (WARP), the KC-390 can refuel combat aircraft through the hose-and-drogue method.

In December 2017, Embraer announced that it has brought the KC-390 to initial operating capability (IOC) with the Brazilian Air Force (Força Aérea Brasileira: FAB). Thus far, Embraer’s two KC-390 prototypes have collectively flown 1,500+ hours along with 40,000 hours of non-flight tests.

In parallel to its immediate commercial efforts, Embraer is also engaged with Boeing to produce a formal partnership, following surrounding concerns of a potential merger.

(to the Brazilian government) to raise a jointly-owned subsidiary with Embraer. This new company would be 80-90% owned by Boeing but be built upon Embraer’s commercial airliner business. In other words, Embraer-proper would retain its defence portfolio (i.e. the KC-390).

on 19 February that it has sold the mothballed Royal Navy landing platform helicopter (LPH) HMS Ocean to Brazil for $117 million US.

Babcock and BAE Systems will modify the HMS Ocean ahead of its delivery to Brazil in June.

The HMS Ocean was commissioned in 1998. Since then, the Royal Navy had accumulated 450,000 nautical miles using the helicopter carrier. Under its Strategic Defence and Security Review (SDSR) for 2015, the UK decided to de-commission the HMS Ocean.

The HMS Ocean’s naval aviation duties will be assumed by the HMS Queen Elizabeth, which will also serve as the Royal Navy’s new flagship. The HMS Queen Elizabeth was designed to maintain both rotary-wing and fixed-wing (F-35B) complements.

The HMS Ocean sale is being managed by the Defence Equipment Sales Authority under the UK MoD.

With a displacement of 22,00 tons, the HMS Ocean can carry up to 18 helicopters of varying capabilities and size, spanning from the six-ton AW159 to the 22-ton CH-47D Chinook. Designed to support amphibious operations, the LPH can also carry 40 vehicles along with a marines force of 830 troops.

to deploy the HMS Ocean as an air and amphibious operations asset for a wide range of roles, including: maritime area control and sea-lane protection, humanitarian and disaster relief, logistics support and peacekeeping operations.

Besides Brazil, Turkey was among the countries reportedly

in the HMS Ocean, ostensibly as an interim training solution ahead of its first new-built landing helicopter deck (LHD), the TCG Anadolu.

Venezuelan soldiers are increasingly deserting and rebelling as the presidential election nears..

"Arrests for rebellion and desertion are rising sharply in Venezuela's armed forces, a mainstay of President Nicolas Maduro's Socialist government, amid discontent within the ranks at food shortages and dwindling salaries, according to documents and interviews with army personnel.

Internal military documents reviewed by Reuters showed that the number of soldiers detained for treason, rebellion and desertion rose to 172 in the first four months of the year, up three-and-a-half times on the same period of 2017.

Former military officials said the figures reflected a dramatic increase in the level of dissent within Venezuela's once-proud armed forces. In the whole of 2017, a total of 196 soldiers were arrested on similar charges, according to the same documents."

Argentina considers resuming nuclear submarine project

By Santiago Rivas - Jane's Navy International

Following the loss of Argentina’s TR 1700-class diesel-electric submarine (SSK) ARA San Juan in November 2017, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) is considering restarting construction of sister vessel ARA Santa Fe and competing it as a nuclear variant, the Argentine Congress was informed on 3 July.

San Juan was one of two German-built TR 1700 submarines delivered in the 1980s that formed the core of the Argentine submarine force. The second boat, ARA Santa Cruz , is currently undergoing an extended refit that is expected to be completed in late 2019/early 2020.

Construction on third boat Santa Fe began in the 1980s but was suspended in the early 1990s when it was 70% complete.

The Argentine Air Force is to receive three new Pampa III aircraft, with 18 older Pampa IIs being upgraded to the same standard. (FAdeA)

The aircraft, serial E-824, is the first of three such aircraft due to be delivered to the Argentine Air Force (FAA) to augment its 18 older Pampa IIs. These Pampa IIs will, in time, be upgraded to the Pampa III standard, with the main work comprising the fitting of a full ‘glass’ cockpit.

This milestone marks the resumption of Pampa production after the last models rolled off the then-Lockheed Martin-owned line in 2008. A further 16 partially completed aircraft have been in storage since that time.
