The fighting men and women of Britain’s armed forces might be lean and mean, but the Ministry of Defence asset base isn't. , with a sell-off of surplus land, barracks and equipment with the proceeds going to reinforce front-line capabilities. But what's up for sale - and how much will it cost to buy that tank you've always dreamed of having in the drive?
Guide price: £39,995 - Scimitar armoured reconnaissance vehicle. MoD Sales is offering a 195hp diesel-powered version of this light tank, although its 30mm cannon has been removed and replaced with a dummy barrel, meaning it won't be much use if you want to sort out disputes over parking spaces. However, in the event of a chemical or biological attack its forced air system means you can lock it down and remain safe. Foreign buyers will have to show a full export licence. Visit if you fancy one.
Guide price £55,000 - Also available from Witham, a CVRT (Combat Vehicle Reconnaissance Tracked) Samaritan battlefield ambulance that's as new after a thorough reconditioning. With a crew of two and capable of carrying three stretchers or eight walking wounded and a medic, the Samaritan can hit 50mph on roads and has a range of about 450 miles. Only 50 were produced so it's a collector's item. Sadly, the vehicle's smoke dispensers will be removed before sale.
Price: Open to bids - HMS Walney is a Sandown Class minesweeper, used to locate and identify the underwater explosive devices. The 450-tonne vessel with a crew of 34 entered service in 1993 and was decommissioned in 2010. The 170ft vessel is currently in Portsmouth docks, and isn't going anywhere fast, having had her engines and most of her fittings removed. Built with a glass-reinforced plastic hull so as not to set off magnetic mines, her scrap value is lower than a conventionally constructed ship. Buyers should contact the MoD's Disposal Services Authority at [email protected] if they want to arrange a visit.
Price: £10, 250 - Companies are awash with examples of that stalwart of the British military, the Land Rover, complete in drab olive paint schemes. This right-hand drive, soft-top example is available from ex-mod.com, who promise that it 'runs and drives well, with plenty of power'.
