Last night a Royal Air Force (RAF) Reaper remotely piloted air system was involved in a coalition air strike in the Kirkuk region. The Reaper had been tasked to conduct reconnaissance in an area where Iraqi forces had encountered ISIL fighters. The operators were able to use the Reaper’s advanced systems to identify a number of ISIL positions, enabling another Coalition aircraft to attack a command post, bunker, observation post and two armed pick-up trucks. They then identified a further 3 positions, and, having carefully checked the area, conducted attacks using the Reaper’s own Hellfire missiles. Initial analysis indicates that the attacks were successful.

British troops sit on board an RAF C-17 as they fly home from Kandahar Airfield, Afghanistan. Now that British combat operations have ended and the last UK base in Afghanistan had been handed over to the control of Afghan security forces, any remaining troops are leaving the country via Kandahar.

Exercise Cougar

Exercise Cougar (or COUGAR) is a routine large scale international exercise held by the Royal Navy. It was created under the Strategic Defence and Security Review to demonstrate the operational readiness of the Response Force Task Group (RFTG) to respond to threats worldwide. Unlike Joint Warrior, exercise COUGAR deploys outside of the United Kingdom (primarily to the Mediterranean and Indian Ocean) to demonstrate "its [RFTG] ability to operate as a rapid reaction force on behalf of the UK and, importantly, underlines the global reach and flexibility of the modern Royal Navy." As an international exercise, the RFTG gets the chance to engage in "intense" exercises with foreign and allied navies.

UK Troops Leaving Afghanistan

Personnel from 904 Expeditionary Air wing and the Joint Force Support Unit based at Kandahar Air Field in Afghanistan head back to the UK on a Royal Air Force C17 Globemaster aircraft.

Since the closing of Camp Bastion in October UK military personnel have been leaving theatre as Operation Herrick comes to end and Allied Forces hand over the country's security fully to the Afghan National Forces.

Exercise Black Eagle in Poland

More than 1300 British soldiers and 100 armoured vehicles, including Challenger 2 Main Battle Tank and Warrior Armoured Infantry Fighting Vehicle, from the 3rd UK Division are taking part in Exercise BLACK EAGLE, a British/Polish NATO exercise taking place in western Poland.

Soldiers from The King’s Royal Hussars, the UK’s Lead Armoured Battlegroup operating Challenger 2, are conducting live-firing battlefield scenarios alongside their Polish counterparts with Leopard Main Battle Tanks, whilst 1st Battalion The Royal Welsh, with the Warrior, is providing the troops on the ground.

A significant demonstration of the UK’s support to the region and NATO’s Immediate Assurance Measures, Ex BLACK EAGLE also highlights the British Army’s ability to deploy an armoured battlegroup at short notice anywhere in the world in support of the nation’s allies.
