The UK Bobbies (Metro Police) are known for their patience in dealing with people including the troublesome ones. They had a very hard time with rowdy rioters & scums in London & a few other UK cities recently. It's not only during the Notting Hill Carnival that these Bobbies project themselves as friendly, & nice. They can be very firm with the law breakers/rogues & that's good for law and order. Sometimes they have been unfair press reports/criticisms about them. You have to be in London & the UK to experience their sense of fairness & duty. One can observe/read what has happened in some other cities in other countries (you would know about them) - the police are waiting to clobber dissenters, peaceful protesters with a very heavy hand.

How come certain UK police officers wore the "bobby" hat and some don't? Is there a distinguish unit for it? Can female officers wear them?

Hi Equation - my limited knowledge (others especially the Brits could also comment) is that the "helmet" - bobby hat as you called it is usually worn by the unarmed police on patrol in the streets of London & other British Cities. It's traditional from 100 plus ago?. I noticed that those who are armed & on patrols at airports & strategic locations wear the peak caps. Police women do not wear the "helmets" - they have their own police women head-dress, same as in China I believe. My comments are based on my observations whenever I visit London & UK, once in 1 or 2 years. Hope this helps - others might want to add-on with their knowledge of the British/Metro Police.

's capital. But hundreds of members went ahead with a so-called "static demonstration" in the Tower Hamlets area. Some threw bottles and scuffled with police officers surrounding them to keep control. The English Defense League insists it is a peaceful organization opposing Islamist extremism. But its past protests have often resulted in violence.

Racialism & Extremism do exist not only in the UK but throughout the World. Their ugly "heads" are usually raised during times of economic and financial downturns, as happening today. Prudent immigration policies by governments are important. To solve these difficult problems government policies have no choice but to be FAIR & FIRM. These anti-immigrant outbursts are expected in a good number of countries for the next couple of years as the world struggles thru' the current crisis. The dilemma is how to solve the disenchantments? Heavy handedness against protesters is a "no no" in democratic countries. Allowing them to take advantage is also bad, so Intelligent & Creative Policing are important, which I think the UK Police is capable of handling such situations, I hope.

I agreed with your comment. Though I would have use a different tactic, like say give them a little bit of power and responsibility. And if they fail to meet that responsibility with the power given to them, embarrass them to no end, until they yield and realize that their way won't work. Pulverization the leadership with constant criticism and protest in front to see how they like it when someone is doing to them.

Enhanced vehicles for Royal Lancers in Helmand

Up-armoured vehicles are giving extra protection to the soldiers of the 9th/12th Royal Lancers, as they provide security in the Nahr-e Saraj (North) district of Helmand Province.

The first of the enhanced Combat Vehicle Reconnaissance (Tracked) (CVR(T)) fleet are now operational and being put to good use by the Lancers, whose main task is to over watch the battle space either side of Highways 1 and 611, the two main supply routes that run through the Task Force Helmand area of operations.

BAE Systems has upgraded the armour on all five vehicles that make up the CVR(T) family – Scimitar, Spartan, Samson, Sultan and Samaritan – through an Urgent Operational Requirement process worth around £30M; Crown copyright..

Tks Popeye for the photos of the armoured vehicles. If I am not mistaken these vehicles were purchased from Singapore Defence Industry at a competitive price a few years ago. Reportedly, they are good vehicles capable of withstanding land mines in Afghanistan - as claimed by the Brits. These vehicles were manufactured & produced jointly with the Americans, I heard. Sorry I am a Navy guy & am not into Army weaponry.

advill allow me to correct.. the vehicle you are refering to is the Bronco ATTC made by ST Techbologies of Singapore. It is renamed the Warthog in British Army service replacing the old vikings APC.
