Brazil acquires the French ship "Siroco" which will be called "Bahia"
(Defensa.com) Confirming versions of Janes, published After hours, now it is the digital publication Defesa Aero Naval ratifying the acquisition by Brazil of the amphibious assault ship LPD Foudre class L 9012 "Siroco". Portugal desisted from purchase, apparently by the difficulties encountered on the ship to operate with heavy helicopter AW101 Merlin its Air Force, and Chile, with its twin, "Sergeant Village", did the same earlier this year.
Negotiations have been conducted by the French Embassy in Brasilia and the possibility of this transaction has been admitted by spokesmen for the Navy that country. The ship would be classified locally as Multipurpose Amphibious Ship (NAM), called G-40 "Bay" and was officially incorporated, after further inspection by DCNS- exhaustive and trained his crew, by the end of this year. It will replace the old NDD Ceará, with serious maintenance problems.
With more than 11,000 tons displacement and 168 meters in length, the hull is three quarters of the length of the ship, and sleeps eight landing craft. The flight deck allows operations in all-weather transport helicopters Cougar, Caracal, Sea Hawk or similar type.
