I called all my family members up in the Boston area, and thankfully they are alright! My sister couldn't get in touch with her husband who works in the Federal Reserve Bank in Boston with her cell phone for most of the day because they shut it down , to possibly prevent the perpetrator from further triggering another bomb somewhere else. He's okay now. It's pretty surreal for them right now. My condolences to all the victims family members.

That is apparently the procedure now to disrupt cell phone service so they can't be used to set off bombs. I'm always asked why don't I get rid of my landline. Cell phone networks are not as reliable. Just imagine if people around these types of incidents didn't know this information and were wondering why they couldn't get in contact with anyone.

IEDs in Iraq and Afganistan are know to have used cell phones as a radio controls , and some bomb makers are not to finicky on what signals will set off their device.In other cases like 911 the huge volume of calls overloaded the bandwith.

Any high profile event needs much heavier scrutiny and security well before the event to check things like the trash bins near by.

My understanding (from ome source) is that pressure cookers were used, with ball bearings.

Something like that is not a typical "explosive" device...but could easily be found if one was looking for odd devices in the wrong places. Certainly, seeing a pressure cooker in a trash bin for the marathon would have caused the area to be cordoned off and sanitized.

We have to remain vigilant and on our guard. We have enemies willing and able to attack us in any way they can. We have foiled many attacks over the last 12 yeats...this one got through.

Slightly OT, but why are some of the SWOT teams dressed in military digital camo? Seems a bit odd.

The third death of the bombing has been identified as a female Chinese national who was reported as being a student attending Boston University.

Talk about militarized police, without the police badges and writing, I would of thought those were soldiers.

Well you are looking at three or four police agencys all getting their uniforms and gear off the rack some from the US government some from supply companies and unlike china who has the PAP their is no unified national police force so thing are going to very.

Sad to hear, poor girl and her family. But why did they put a picture of her in that story if her family asked for her not to be identified?
