Looks like the centralized PLAN task force defeated two South Vietnamese squadrons in detail, before they could coordinate their attacks against the somewhat weaker Chinese force. Kind of like what Grant did in the Vicksburg Campaign against Pamperton and Johnston.

Given that the ships on both sides were fairly vulnerable against either 127mm on the AVRN frigates or the smaller calibers of the PLAN gunboats, the Chinese, IIRC, closed in and directed rapid accurate fire against the frigate's vital unarmored areas.
