Australia's "Crocodile Hunter" Irwin dies: media
SYDNEY (Reuters) - Steve Irwin, the quirky Australian naturalist who won worldwide acclaim, has died in a marine accident off Australia's northeast coast, local media reported on Monday.

Queensland state government sources quoted by Australian Associated Press (AAP) said Irwin, 44, whose television show "The Crocodile Hunter" won international acclaim and popularized the phrase "Crikey," was believed to have been killed by a stingray barb that pierced his chest.

He was filming an underwater documentary off Port Douglas when the accident occurred, the report said.

Sky Television also reported that Irwin had been stung by a sting ray.

Australian emergency officials could not immediately confirm the reports.

Irwin won a global following for his daredevil antics but also triggered outrage in 2004 by holding his then one-month-old baby while feeding a snapping crocodile at his Australian zoo.

Sad news, I use to love his shows. Such a brave guy :(
Always though an aligator or crocodile would kill him

God bless his family. He left behind a wife and two young kids who will grow up without a dad. :( Not to mention the Queensland Zoo loosing it's director.

R.I.P, Steve. God bless.

That is the saddest news so far... I remember his shows best when I was in Australia studying. In fact his shows are one of first to get me interested in the nature shows.

Alas...:( :(

Yeah, I heard about that. It's a little weird, because his show was on TV only yesterday.

Anyway, he was a great conservationist and personality. His work will live on, though.

WHAT?! unbelievable... died just like that...
I would expect him to die because of snake or crocodile bites, not filming accidents in the sea...

very sad indeed.

He was a very original guy-he kind of invented that genre of nature film. He did a lot of work for conservation and never got very much profit from what he did (with the possible exception of the Crocodile hunter movie, which was actually entertaining.) He will be missed.
