You’re both correct. In the launch ceremonies of both Liaoning and Shandong they definitely called them “Carrier 001” and “Carrier 002”. So Liaoning is Carrier 001 and CV-16. Shandong on the other hand is Carrier 02 and CV-17. But one thing for sure, PLAN has never called either carriers “Type-XXX”.

Hello, I always wondered why aircraft carriers are equipped with powerfull radars. They arent equipped with SSM or medium to long range SAM, so there isn't a real need for radars which are generally even better than the ones equipped on destroyers.

US, chinese carriers, but even the Italian trieste is equipped with an L band very long range radar. I don't understand the need to equip those carriers with such radars.

No, there is no official Chinese designation like CV-16 or CV-17. As far as I know all PLAN ships are called by their name and pennant number as such it would be most likely "PLA Navy aircraft carrier Liaoning (or Shandong) no. 16 (or 17).

I've always thought the purpose of an aircraft carrier lies in her air wing, not in her missiles (though she may have some for self defense, by the way the QE doesn't because the RN is broke), so I've always thought her powerful radar (the QE mounts an Artisan, the Liaoning what looks like kinda Fregat derivative, I'm curious about the status of a SPY-4 on the Ford, etc.) is for finding, tracking targets to vector own aircraft against said targets
