I mean the whole thing is pretty simple: China warned DS employees from travelling to the US because of obvious kidnapping risk
American sees it and reads it as China bans DS employees from travelling to the US, because they tell themselves everyone wants to become American, they then invents taking away passport as mechanism.
Tbf US government wouldn't do anything, in part precisely because of their recent experiences in losing Intel agency battles.
However I don't see why someone needs to go there on vacation at all. There are very few drawing points.
If you're a smart young engineer (like the ones working at deepseek), I'm 99% sure you're redpilled on the US threat, we're not talking about cantonese boomers who want to see the golden gate, Vegas or other bs.
Smart young engineers are notoriously stupid at just about everything except engineering, speaking from personal experience here. Another perfect example is the DOGE guys.
Baidu is a joke of a company at the moment. They should have been the Google of China. But they are the worst run tech giant in China.
Whats really interesting imo is not their thinking model but Ernie 4.5 which looks to be about equal to GPT 4.5 in accuracy but with extremely cheap price in comparison
