yeah, ByteDance is getting into the open sourcing game too. You flood open source market with Chinese models and crash the business case for American models. That has to be how you get this to be more fair.

Take a look at huggingface just to see how many models are Chinese. A lot of DeepSeek distilled download

How will these chinese startup AI companies like Deepseek make money I'd they provide all their services free? I understand tech giants like Alibaba,Tencent, Bytedance etc can afford to do this lomh term since they have other main revenue sources but how will smaller start-up survive this?

Well, they have now one of the most popular app globally now. Did you ask Google this question when they were getting users?

There won't be shortage of firms in China that would love to work with them.

Perplexity is now integrated with DeepSeek R1. Although I have not checked the pricing on this. Here is the thing though, there is noting preventing 3rd party from taking their own local build of R1 and using it or creating apps with it. It's super easy . The data security argument doesn't work when you can host these things entirely outside of China.
So Deepseek uncensored version outside China then?
However, will they not violate Chinese law indirectly? No self censoring on certain topics?

The entire Huawei and Ascend situation with DeepSeek is just utterly embarrassing. How can they not even be bothered to have been working with DeepSeek before this. Read the photo, DeepSeek-V3 is about to come online!

V3 has been out for a month. And they are only bringing the integration out now when everyone on Chinese social media is talking about DeepSeek.

Huawei should be ashamed of themselves.

There is a vicious rumor that their private equity backers have been shorting NVIDIA.

The money is not in the AI Model itself. Its in the application of it. There are many things you can do with it (e.g. predicting what stocks to short) either publicly or privately. Or maybe as a nation you use it to predict medical conditions and treat them ahead of time (thus saving money)...

Typically provide api hosting, building and selling application services ontop of the open source, provide consulting services etc. Mongodb/Reddis was previously open source and they were fine with people using it in the enterprise "license free" but they changed the license terms when cloud companies begun to host and charge for usage since that competed with their saas offering. Maybe they are already building something better in the pipeline that they will have modified license.
