Skynet Terminator Speaks Chinese

By JAMES TAYLOR

Skynet, the evil artificial intelligence in the Terminator movies and television series, gained consciousness this week. According to the Terminator television show, Skynet became self-aware on April 19 at 8:11 p.m., and on April 21 will begin directing machines in an all-out war to exterminate the human race.

If we listen to Terminator director James Cameron, however, Skynet is actually evil global warming rather than evil artificial intelligence. If that is truly the case, then Skynet must speak Chinese.

At exactly 8:11 p.m. Tuesday night, the exact time and date Skynet achieved self-awareness in Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, Cameron tweeted, “Skynet was supposed to go operational tonight. Instead of machines taking over, we have the very real threat of global warming.”

Forget for the moment that even after 150 years of global warming, global temperatures remain strikingly cool compared to the temperatures that have predominated during most of the history of human civilization. Forget for the moment that global temperatures haven’t risen at all during the past decade. Let’s assume, for the sake of argument, that we really are facing a global warming crisis.

If that is the case, the Terminator series got Skynet’s location wrong. According to just-released U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) statistics, the evil global warming Skynet must be based in China rather than California.

According to a March 31 report issued by the EIA, U.S. carbon dioxide emissions from energy consumption were 7 percent lower in 2009 than in 2000. Even before the longstanding economic slump began in 2008, U.S. emissions remained essentially flat, rising merely 2 percent between 2000 and 2007. If the fear is that constantly rising carbon dioxide emissions will bring on a global warming catastrophe, we can confidently cancel that alarm, at least as far as U.S. culpability is concerned.

The real cause for concern, if we believe global warming is truly an imminent crisis, is China. China emits more carbon dioxide emissions than any nation on earth. In 2009, according to the EIA, China emitted 42 percent more carbon dioxide than the United States. Between 2000 and 2009, China alone accounted for fully 74 percent of the growth in global carbon dioxide emissions.

China not only emits more carbon dioxide than any other nation on earth, it is emitting it at an accelerating pace. Chinese emissions have nearly tripled since the year 2000. Even under the weight of the global recession, Chinese emissions rose 13 percent in 2009 alone.

If China is removed from the global equation, there is no global warming crisis – even if we believe alarmist global warming claims. With China removed from the equation, global carbon dioxide emissions are rising less than 1 percent per year. That minimal upward trend may well turn negative soon as a result of recent advances in energy technology and the discovery of massive natural gas deposits that can replace carbon-intensive coal power.

The projection of globally declining carbon dioxide emissions holds true, however, only if China is removed from the global equation or if China commits to halting the rapid increase in its carbon dioxide emissions. China is not going to disappear from the planet anytime soon, which eliminates the first option. As far as the second, China has repeatedly stated it will under no circumstances commit to carbon dioxide restrictions.

Environmental activist assertions that China would agree to reduce its carbon dioxide emissions if only the United States were to demonstrate leadership is pure propaganda. The United States has already reduced its carbon dioxide emissions, yet China has explicitly stated it will not commit to carbon dioxide restrictions no matter what the United States or the rest of the world does.

With global temperatures remaining below the long-term average, and with temperatures rising relatively slowly if at all, the identity of Skynet is quite unlikely to be global warming. But if Skynet truly is global warming, Skynet most definitely speaks Chinese.

Cumulative greenhouse gas emissions, who's responsible for the clean-up?

Cumulative Emissions (millions of tons): Using totals from the mid-19th century up to the present day, the U.S. and E.U. far surpass other countries in their historical contribution to global warming. The original 1992 UN climate change convention in Rio de Janeiro, which paved the way for the Kyoto Protocol of 1997, called for developed nations to take the lead in cutting emissions.

Per Capita Emissions (tons per person): Compared to industrialized countries, less developed nations contribute relatively little to global emissions. But some developing countries such as India, with the world’s second highest population and rapid economic growth, could see sharp per-person emissions increases.

Note: I have moved this post to the Chinese Economics thread. Greenhouse gas emissions are a mainstream topic and it doesn't really belong in a thread on Darwin Awards.

LOL, exactly how do you "remove China from the global equation"?

As usual with these idiocies, they never consider the fact that China has 4 times the population of the US. 142% / 4 = 35.5% => Each individual Chinese has only 35.5% the carbon foot print of a typical American.

This is a classic case of "rich people deserve more privileges than poor people".

Well I wanted to add Donald Trump in but but no one really has done an encompassing article or interview of him to post the whole range of stupidity out of Trump. Most of it is about the birth certificate. But John King of CNN just aired an interview going beyond the birther crap and he was talking about trade. Trump says he'd rather buy American when constructing his buildings but materials cost four times more than the Chinese. Easy... buy American. He claims China manipulating its currency prevents him from buying American. No, Trump chooses not to buy American. If China revalued its currency to what he says where it should be so American companies can compete, what he wants to buy from Americans is still four times the cost of what it was when China was manipulating. So he chooses not to buy American. Then Trump's wife has a line of jewelry being sold on QVC TV all made in China. Is he going to use the same excuses here? What is more out of touch with the Western media concentrating on the "birther" issue is how Trump advocates stealing other countries' resources especially oil. So he wants the US to do what the most evil empires the West labels in history have done to get their reputations. Everything Trump wants will clash with all the international institutions the West has created and he will destroy. Love how he thinks because since he's a New York tough guy, the world will bend to his will when he looks them in the eye. He actually believes that. It's like when I hear people think American street gangs are the most fearsome fighting force that can beat every military in the entire world. Of course you're bad-ass... when the other guy doesn't have a gun. Drive-bys are acts of cowards. If Trump gets elected President he'll probably put the US through its greatest humilation and/or he'll start a world war. Maybe he'll nuke Venezuela when Hugo Chavez calls him a "doo-doo-head."

China Critic Trump Has His ‘Donald J. Trump Signature Collection’ Suits Made…In China

Oh, Department of Delicious Irony. The self-professed possible potential presidential candidate Donald Trump, who’s been a harsh critic of buying products from China, has his “Donald J. Trump Signature Collection” suits and ties manufactured–yep–in China. As Salon’s Justin Elliott discovered, the clothing line that “promises to provide ‘the pinnacle of style and sophistication’ and ‘the necessities to be boardroom ready all of the time’” comes with a “Made in China” tag.

Donald Trump has emerged in recent years as the nation’s foremost China basher, going after the Asian superpower for undervaluing its currency and for taking American manufacturing and jobs. So it’s at least ironic — and at most an example of gross hypocrisy — that Trump’s own line of men’s wear, the Donald J. Trump Signature Collection, is manufactured in China.

Elliott notes that Trump–who truly insists he may in fact perhaps be running for president–”has long complained about Chinese currency ‘manipulation’ and has called for a large tariff on imports from China” and has urged Americans to buy fewer products made in China. Maybe that’s why other parts of the Donald J. Trump Signature Collection are made in Mexico and Bangladesh?

Furthermore, the calculations did not take into account the Chinese content in the products used by the U.S. The carbon footprint associated with this content should be taken off China contribution of carbon emission and added into US contribution of carbon emission. The users who ultimately use the products should be held accountable for the part of the products' carbon footprint!

Hey, talking about currency manipulation, I'm still waiting for the global currency exchange rates to go back to the pre 1997 Asian financial crisis level. At the time, it was the Asian countries who claimed that their currency was unfairly manipulated to be undervalued. Well, whoever that was doing the manipulation, it seems like they can't manipulate it back to the pre 1997 crisis level and, instead, are now accusing others of manipulating.

What exactly are the Darwin Awards?
(In context of the articles that are being posted -- of course I wiki'd it but I don't really see the relevance with the articles here)
