Aircraft Carriers III

I checked at sea-distances.org: it should take 1 day 15 and hours at her economical speed of 15 kn (582 nm):
NUSHIP Adelaide Heads to Her Sydney Homeport
Australian Navy’s newest vessel NUSHIP Adelaide started her delivery voyage to her homeport, Fleet Base East, Sydney.

According to social media, the Canberra class amphibious assault ship departed the BAE Systems shipyard in Williamstown, Melbourne, on 28 October, and will be soon handed over to the Navy.

is this really true 2 x Tu-142 bombers flew within a mile of the USS Ronald Reagan !??

That's certainly in visual range

That's very very close

So question is, did USN fail to detect them otherwise why wait till they get so close

Or they knew they were did and did nothing incase it caused a diplomatic incident ??

Some answers required

Although it's routine to be shadowing it's not routine to be this close

Apparently the US Navy did track them, as did the Koreans. I believe Korean fighters performed the initial intercept, but as they got close to the Reagan, it was handed off to four F-18s which were launched from the Reagan.

Some people and even commanders can get complacent in peace time. Rest assured, if the US Navy brass thinks this happened regarding a US CSG, you will see commanders on some of those vessels replaced.

But, as I understand this event, the two aircraft were detected and intercepted. They still flew on.

The press will make a big deal out of it. A US Navy 7th fleet spokesman spoke to it as well and indicated the similarities...and differences...between similar events during the cold war.

Really good read Forbin thanks

With permission to share

I like it how carriers have developed, from long range deep strike to low maintance and high sorties rates

From 29,000 lb payload at 1,800nm to current 12,000lb and 500nm range with F18

They went from small range to long range to medium range in current state

Some more highlights

KA-6 could tank 12 x A6 aircraft to 1,800 nm
KA-3 could tank 8 x A3 aircraft to 1,800nm
And now F18 Hornet can tank 4 x F18 to 1,000nm

And the cancelled aircraft A12 was to have double the range of the A6!!

This was carrier operations based on range and deep strike

After 1991 that changed overall carrier air wing operations

As someone that actually served aboard a CV during the Cold War I can tell you no matter what those aircraft were detected miles away from the RR. Very seldom is anyone in CIC sleeping at the switch.

Russian over flights of carriers was common during the Cold War. The vast majority of the Russian overflights were intercepted.

It's not always the Russians. In '81 while I was aboard America we were overflown by an Iranian P-3...naturally that aircraft was intercepted by a Tomcat.

A U.S. Navy Grumman F-14A-105-GR Tomcat (BuNo 160921) from Fighter Squadron VF-213 Black Lions intercepting an Iranian Lockheed P-3F Orion over the Indian Ocean. VF-213 was assigned to Carrier Air Wing 11 (CVW-11) aboard the aircraft carrier USS America (CV-66) for a deployment to the Mediterranean Sea and the Indian Ocean from 14 April to 12 November 1981.
