Do you remember back in the 1990's or maybe early 2000's there were some hikers stranded on Mount Hood that the USAF attempted to rescue with an HH-60 Pave Hawk? The helo came too close to something, touched a rotor blade which immediately spit off and the helo tumbled down the snowy slopes of Mount Hood, all of which was caught by a TV news helicopter? Do you recall that crash? All four crew members survived and that airframe was rebuilt and returned to service! Blackhawks are tough. It's intentional. The Army saw how their helos were damaged or destroyed and crew were lost in combat in Vietnam. The capability document for the Blackhawk required an unheard of level of crash surviveability. The same is true of the Apache. Those two helos will survive impacts that would mangle other helos.
Been pounding this drum now for several years. Studies have been done for the AEW version (and the ASW version too I am sure). The British considered the AEW version. Here's the concept drawing and Boeing spec sheet for the AEW version:

I'm trying to find more pics. I know they must be out there. She's a very nice looking, multi-role carrier and will be a very fitting flagship for the Spanish fleet.
With their other carrier, their AEGIS frigates, and their amphibious capabilities, the Spanish have developed a real naval force worthy of respect...as have the Italians.
If you look at Europe as a whole, with the British, the French, the Spanish and the Italians, you have a total of eight carriers eventually and some very powerful escort vessels, as well as significant amphibious capability.

She is certainly a large and impressive ship - perhaps the most powerful LHD outside of the USN. The ski ramp is certainly prominent and should facilitate the operation of VSTOL aircraft. I can't wait to see the first of her two sister ships operational with the RAN (just needs a few F-35Bs to round out the package!
