According to news report, he borrowed that phone from villagers to report to base. He could be waiting for a call so he has to hold on to it.
Also, according to news local villagers offered him a drink but he did not accept and kept silent throughout.

There have been incidents of J11B before but there's no cases of both engines failing as far as I can recall.
There's definitely cases of engine problems especially a few years ago. There has even been cases where the engines eject components out. But in recent years although training of J11B has intensified, number of incidents has declined dramatically.

You need to remember that WS-10/A is product from Shenyang, the same company producing J-11A/B or J-15/J-16 ... that's why you would see all new J-11B and J-15 use WS-10A ... and obviously there are fierce rivalry between Chengdu (J-10x and J-20) and Shenyang
I believe the Chinese Govt would need to step in and separate it out between engine and aircraft manufacturer ... so fair for everybody

I'd say, it's much better for it to happen now than in the future when you'd have to recall large number of the aircraft.
