What Does Putin Want?

a CNN analysis says Putin wants to rewrite history, Putin wants to reconstitute the Soviet Union, Putin is going to invade Ukraine....

my take is today's Russia doesn't have the capacity to reconstitute the Soviet Union, what Putin wants is partially reconstitute Czar's Russia, he wants historic Russian territories and Russian people back.

there's significant difference between Czar's Russia and today's Russia Federation. when forming the Soviet Union, the Bolshevik gave large chunks of Russian territories to neighboring republics, the purpose was to change the population, and make those republics easy to govern. typical examples are Donbas and Crimea. when the Soviet Union broke up, Russia lost all those territories and people, which makes Russia the biggest peaceful loser in history. Putin wants those back. but the West is mindset to keep Russia down, no change of status quo, by force or by peace.

well, the question of who were the Huns has not been properly answered. the Huns were not very East, at least not in today's geopolitical sense. The Xiongnu was finally defeated in 89AD, they started to migrate westwards after that.

Ugh, that's like saying Xi wants to reconstitute the Qing Empire.

How about instead, Putin wants a stable Russia secure from the military and political threats posed by the West.

Putin refuses to accept the outcome of the cold war. he dismisses Ukraine as an independent nation in many occasions, he even wrote an essay on it. he once embarrassingly praised the president of Kazakhstan "founded a country never existed before".

You're just grasping at straws.

The current Russia-Ukraine hostilities are the result of the West overthrowing the legitimate government of Ukraine and replacing it with a puppet regime hostile to Russian interests. People who fixate on Putin's supposed "ambitions" and "aggression" always seem to ignore this fact. The Russian annexation of Crimea and the eastern Ukraine rebellion are direct responses to that hostile Western action.
