Its interesting that PLA has advanced tailless unmanned fighter in service but still operate 100+ J-7 in several brigades.

PLAGF still operates type 59 relics while putting advanced 4th gen tank in service.

No country has the level of disparity in equipment generations.

The navy is the only force that doesn't operate ultra old relics. Everything is mostly brand new.

To some extent, this is also because the navy really didn’t have many ships before the 1990s.

J-7 can be used as a trainer, type 59 can still be used as an assault gun, and the 100mm gun can still penetrate many vehicles, but the performance gap between the new and old naval ships is just too large.

The funny thing is those J-7s are still less old than the F-15Cs the US operates. The J-7 design is obsolete but the actual aircraft were built not that long ago. The last J-7 was built in 2013.

As J-35 production ramps up those J-7 will get retired.
