Wait - Apparently this missile isn't PL-16? Might just be one PL-15 variant instead?

Yeah for now I'm calling it "new BVRAAM/compact BVRAAM/PL-15 variant".

It's unclear if this is the PLA's selection for the "six BVRAAM in weapons bay" contract, and we don't know if the PLA's selection for that contract is actually called PL-16.

Additionally, in theory we also don't know if this weapon is a BVRAAM or even a AAM -- in theory it could be a SAM (though the hardpoint attachments on the dorsal side does make me think it looks like it is meant to be air launched)

@洋务先驱张之洞 in his initial post does mention "medium-to-long-range air-to-air missile with folding fins for use in the weapon bays of stealth fighter aircrafts" (用于隐身战机弹舱内挂的折叠翼中远程空空弹).

Yes, which I think is wise.

I still remember the PL-15/PL-17 naming debacle about a decade ago.

Saude invested $70 -million on j35 project, there is strong possibility that the jet will produce in SA.
I think you missed a 0 lol. 70 million is like the export price for 1 J-10C...

If Saudis want this, they'll get at least more than 1(lmao) plane. Chance of making them there is less than 0, Saudis don't have the tech to make or perform major maintainent on it. Nobody in the region has.

MBS visited China feb.21 2021,among the topic was economic cooperation.likely saude investment $70 million on j35 was part of the program, but other believe was to prevent the iranian from obtaining the technology, since it may needed saude approval

None of this makes sense. The idea that 70million dollars is a useful amount to contribute to the development of a fighter program like this to enable a nation to have veto rights for who it is sold to, is utterly ridiculous.
