I do expect diesel boats will slowly get retired over time. That is not today there won't be another diesel class after yuan, but I would expect twice as many boats retired compared to new diesel boats put into service.

People said in the 1950´s that conventional submarines would dissapear from the navies around the world. It hasnt happened. Conventional submarines will always be cheaper and simpler than nuclear submarines. There will still be a place for a lot of them in most navies, even in china. Even the USSR, which had a lot of nuclear submarines, had conventional submarines.

Have they actually increased training of the crews to justify claims about 10-20 submarines build each year? Not including those diesel boats being build what also needs crew or are people assuming PLAN dumbs diesel boats?

Nobody talked about 10-20 new submarines each year.

What was raised as an extreme possiblity is attaining 10 submarines launched as a non sustained peak

I think that given that China still has a mostly defensive posture, together with the fact the areas close to the Chinese border where most of their areas of interest are, include really shallow waters, mean that China, much like Russia will keep their conventional submarine program. In fact it is a lot more cost effective than the US all nuclear submarine solution.

That's almost definitely for a submarine, and looks like the aftmost section.

It measures to about 11-12m in diameter, and it's sitting on the 7.34m gauge rail track -- it's likely IMO that this is for an SSN.

The question is whether this is for 09V or 09IIIB.
Some recent mutterings suggesting 09V may have been pushed to the right a bit, possibly for updates to some requirements to deal with future threats better, and that this might be for 09IIIB instead.

Either way, the fact that this module is sitting exactly on the rail where we expect it to, and looks like what we've been expecting it to, is certainly encouraging. It will likely be the first of many.

Width of the hull is quite something.

Measuring it on GE, I'm definitely not getting a figure of under 12 m.

For an attack sub, it'd be one of the wider attack subs out there. Wider than Astute, Virginia and so on. Interestingly Virginia is usually quoted at just 10 m beam, compared to Seawolf's 12 m. Measuring it in GE I do often get not more than 10.5 meter beam so it would indeed appear true Virginia was made narrower than the earlier class.

Of course, Russian subs are even wider (Akula/Sierra/Yasen) and can reach 12 and even more meters across.

Important to note, though, 093 was/is already quite wide, and on GE I usually get measurements of at least 11 meters across and sometimes even approaching 12 meters.

Finally, resolution is still poor enough that it's possible the hull beam is identical to 093.
