075 LHD thread

Apparently a 40,000+ tonnes LHD is in development and will carry WZ-10 and Z-19.

I watched that episode too, and the multiple mentioning of the 40k+ ton LHD was really the highlight of the program. I was struck by the way he almost mentioned it by passing, as if matter-of-factly. Something has changed!

Combined with the rumor around early this year about China's LHD being in the 40-50k class. I'm convinced this is indeed the case. There is no technology barrier, and the helos are in place or will certainly be in place shortly. The requirements can justify LHD of such class, too, what with Diayu Islands, South China Sea etc.

Additionally, it will also be noteworthy if China's next generation DDG will be 12k ton class instead of 9k class, and if China's next conventional aircraft carrier will use CATOBAR.

If any of these are true, China's perceived incremental-ism in naval ship building will be gone out of window. And it will be a strong indication of China's confidence in its defense industry capability as well as its future maritime ambition.

Does that mean there'll be navalized version of Z-10 and Z-19 as well, and PLANAF have their own attack helicopter assets?

Also, the kind of tonnage envisioned place it somewhere short of Wasp class but larger than the rest of the world has at this time.

I really hope this development is true and a Chinese LHD is launched within the next few years. The Liaoning's progress notwithstanding, I am convinced that a LHD is a much more useful type for the Chinese Navy.

I think it will be very close to Wasp class if true, which itself is at 41,150 tonnes full load (wiki :p), really just a few changes short.

Don't know about navalized attack helo, and the commentator did not give a timeline so it could be relatively close or couple years away.

He did mentioned that the attack helo will have a combat radius of around 200km and can be used to engage small tonnage surface ship. (Is this hinting at something? ) Me think it's a good idea not to waste expensive anti-ship missiles on small targets too. ;)

What I'm wondering is where they are going to build it, and why haven't we observed any clues at say HD? Are they building it somewhere remote? And whether they've already progressed to some degree or have they just started and we'll have to wait a couple more years to see it taking shape?

Also do you think they'll ever send this thing to the gulf patrol. Are helos like the wz-10 ever a good anti-piracy weapon? Or will such ship be too valuable, too much over kill, and too much China-is-comming-for-us?

Rumour also has it that three Type 075 LHD's will be built, with deliveries taking place perhaps in 2016-2018.

Hudong does seem like the most likely builder, with Jiangnan as an outsider candidate. There is nowhere remote they could build big sophisticated naval ships.

wouldn't it be better to only use the Z-10 on the future LHD? because even if its a dedicated helicopter carrier lika a Wasp space is precious so why would you use that same space for a Z-19 when the Z-10 has more range and more firepower?
