Comparison of export Type 071 vs. domestic. I look at the two ships, the domestic 071 looks outdated by modern PLAN standards for things like not having 730/1130 CIWS or HQ-10 missiles for self defense. The design was in service in 2007 so much of the design was formed with the technologies available before that date. But during the production run up to the 8th, little is changed, or at least approved to be changed. The 071E might be the modernized 071 HDZ might have envisioned.

I have a couple of problems with the illustration. The 071E deleted the Type 364 radar at the back of the 071, but this radar while not necessary to the functioning of there of, it provides vital support for the CIWS and HQ-10. It does not make sense to include the HQ-10 and two 730 in the bill but cut corners on the Type 364. Its not like the PLAN has any qualms approving this radar for export, such as in the Algerian C28 corvettes. Another is that I suspect they might use the SR2410C rotating single faced S-band AESA search radar that we have seen exported with the Bangladesh corvettes and is included in the Pakistan 054P contract.

If they have decided to use the Type 730B CIWS, then there must be a place to put the Type 347G radar on the center. The 730B is the Type 730 without the Type 347G radar on top of it along with the EO. Instead the two CIWS shares a single Type 347G set between them. This is used on the F22P and the 053H3 refit.

I remember the explanation for lack of better CIWS was that it was an intentional choice because 2 730s would have made up like 10% of the entire cost of the 071 or something like that, and the PLAN naval planners didn't feel this was worth the installation.

I wonder if they are going to start assembling unit before they relocate the 3rd LHD into the dry dock

so we could have 2nd LHD alongside the export Type 071 LPD, the second LHD will be launched first off course

And never get to see 2 x LHD in the dry dock together, a shame

That's because I remember they were also building 054A at the same time and in this dock then, along with the 071. To find these pictures I would have to comb through all the old posts in this forum and others that have around for many years.

HDZ apparently has a second shipyard in Changxian island, located near the Jiangnan shipyard. This is where they are building their large commercial ships that may not fit in their Huangpu River dock. But I don't know if this is certified for warship building, and even if it might be, HDZ also has a heavy commitment load that includes building contracted LNG carriers.

Don't you mean 3rd LHD along side the Type 071E? Assuming there is a rush for the 071E. From the pictures that I've seen, the dry dock appears to be too small to build two LHDs to completion.

They should speed up the building of these type 075, as it is about national security. Why are they selling the type 071E, as it is talking away much needed building capacity that could have gone to building more type 075? Alternatively, HD should increase capacity so that they build all types of warships in parallel..

Selling their ships helps increase China's soft power for its neighbors. There is possibility that the currently in refit 054 and 052B might be sold also. Possibility, still not fact.

HD cannot increase their capacity in the shipyard along the Huangpu river. That shipyard is already surrounded by Shanghai urban area. Look at the satellite images of it or go to Google Earth. Having said this, there are sheds along that drydock that enable them to build smaller ships like 056A simultaneously with the LPD/LHD/FFG that requires the drydock. I am not sure if the sheds can be used to make future frigate (054B). I do feel high certainty that HDZ will build the 054B/057 and is responsible for its design just like they were with the 054/054A and all the way back to the Jiangweis.

There were three 056A of the latest build in the fitting stage at the time the first 075 rolled out the dock. These could not have been built in the drydock but in the sheds nearby.

If HDZ wanted to build bigger ships and beyond this older drydock, it appears they now have an extension at Changxian Island, near the Jiangnan Shipyard. This appears to be where they are building large commercial vessels and their LNG carriers. These kinds of ships will dwarf the LPDs and LHDs in displacement, and would require a new facility.

Its not hard to extrapolate that HDZ's new Changxian facility can be used to build warships and this capacity might be held as a reserve. But as of now, its not being used in this function, and the LNG carriers are necessary for China's energy security.

Since both type 075 LHD and LNG carriers are very important to China, the major shipyards including HD, DL and JN should expand their building capacity. If they can build oil tankers and container ships bigger than 200,000 tonnes, they should not have problems building many type 075 and even CVs at the same time.
