China's Fourth Type 071 LPD Amphibious Vessel Yimeng Shan to be Commissioned February 1st
An article published on the website of the Chinese town of Linyi indicates that the fourth People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN or Chinese Navy) Type 071 amphibious transport dock LPD Yimeng Shan (hull number 988) will be commissioned next Monday, February 1st 2016. Yimeng Shan was built by Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding, a wholly owned subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC, the largest shipbuilding group in China) as was the case for the first three Type 071 vessels.

Yimeng Shan was launched in January last year and started sea trials in September 2015. The vessel is set to join the PLAN's East Sea Fleet (it will be the first vessel of the class for this fleet).

I suspect the shortage of certain key foreign components (such as some small engine parts in which China cannot make) might have slowed down the production of 071s. Or else the planned production of six 071s should have been completed long ago.

No reason to suspect that; budget and demand is as important as anything. Besides, they should have fully indigenized the PC2-6 diesels years ago.

I think 071 production has to do more with demand vs cost. In the last few years the Navy had been expanding production of destroyers, frigates, corvettes, as well as initiating production of carriers and replenishment ships. Even with China's increased military expenditure for year to year they still have to pick and choose priorities, and the amphibious assault capabilities of the 071 class probably were something the Navy were willing to delay a little to push other projects through.

Think also of the finding and training personnel for the many ships now being inducted.

China Central Television news channel (CCTV 13) released a unique video on Yimeng Shan, with nice footage from a camera drone flying around and inside the PLAN latest LPD.

Like the US San Antonio LPDs I find the Chinese Type 071 LPDs really fine looking vessels with a lot of capability.

It's about a relatively new Modern Naval Simulation Game that might be of interest, particularly given your activities. They have a specific version they sell to businesses, agencies, think tanks, etc. for use in training, research, etc.

Great to see the 4th unit commissioned but if China wants to power projection over a long range they need a lot more than 4 x LPD

Let's hope they can build more units and get MEU established

At minimum they need 3 x LPD and a LHD with a LST fleet to have any sort of chance to make a staging ground for a amphibious landing far from home

Long distance operations with sea staging requires large ships and large numbers
