42, then gradually increased to 64, this is the number of corvettes Type 056 ordered by the Chinese Navy so far. If the final figure is still not stopped today, the bar of 50 hulls in the water has already been crossed at the beginning of August.

Admittedly, it is simply a "small" corvette of 1340 tons in load and not so heavily armed as can be seen elsewhere in other parts of the world, where corvettes are sometimes considered a ship for some countries, but the Type 056 is undoubtedly a tailor-made vector for China, which tries to reconcile both the operational needs to protect its coasts and defend its maritime interests, the low operating cost , and the harmonization of its fleets around 4 trips 1,000, 4,000, 6,000 and 12,000 tons.

It was then with a steady pace, just over 8 hulls launched per year on average, that the four Chinese shipyards participating in the program launched the fifty or so class ships, and in space 6 years since the leading ship was launched on May 23, 2012 - The latest in date, the 15ᵉ building built in Guangzhou Huangpu in the south, followed by the 10th in Wuhan in central China.

If the account is good - knowing that official communications are scarce these days and therefore the monitoring has become increasingly difficult - we are at the 51ᵉ and 52ᵉ corvettes of the class but it remains to reconfirm.

And admitting that the Chinese shipyards keep the same pace to assemble and arrange the Type 056, that is to say that the construction should end in a year or a year and a half, ie towards the end of 2019, to put the total number of vessels in the current order book.

With a unit purchase price of between 85 and 90 million euros depending on the versions and a sufficiently large number, the Type 056 program is one of many examples illustrating the desire and ambition of the China to (re) become a hybrid power, both continental and oceanic.

Since January 1, 2018, the Chinese naval industry has already launched no less than 19 new surface ships for the Chinese navy, 3 more than last year while there are still 4 and a half months before end of year.

But looking at tonnage, these 19 ships this year represent only about 57% in terms of the displacement of the 16 vessels launched in 2017, largely because there are had last year an aircraft carrier, a tanker of more than 40,000 tons and a landing ship of more than 20,000 tons, while this year, apart from the 3 destroyers Type 055 of 12,000 tons, the others are only smaller size vessels, the 8 Type 056. Of course, a synthesis will be made by the end of the year to confirm or not this trend.

One of the four Chinese shipyards involved in the construction of the Type 056 corvettes, Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding , launched "discreetly" on Wednesday a new hull for the Chinese navy.

The news is almost unnoticed - firstly, in a statement issued by the classification society China Classification Society (CSS), which talks about the simultaneous launch on the same day of two scientific research vessels for fishing at Hudong-Zhonghua, which was seen on the corner of a photo the silhouette of this corvette in question.

Later, photos of some Shanghai spoilers, still very active in following the military shipbuilding in the Chinese coastal city, also confirm the launch of this new corvette Type 056 to 12 September in the afternoon.

If the account is good, it is the 18th class ship for Hudong-Zhonghua, which is also the 53rd series, or the 9th copy launched this year. It can be seen that this shipyard in Shanghai as well as the Huangpu shipyard in Guangzhou continue to lead the dance in the construction of the Type 056 corvettes.

Indeed, when these two shipyards usually launch between two and three ships of this class per year, the two other entities, Wuchang and Liaonan, are satisfied with a figure a little more modest.

But despite a fairly steady pace since 2012, the year when the first Type 056 was launched in Shanghai, we still observed a flop last year, in 2017, where only three hulls were launched.

Knowing that there is still a quarter before the end of 2018, we will see if the Chinese industry could beat its own record in terms of the number of corvettes launched per year.

Officials from Chinese company Ziyan revealed at the Africa Aerospace and Defence (AAD) 2018 exhibition in South Africa on 19–23 September that the Blowfish I vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) has entered service with the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN).

The Zhuhai-based UAV manufacturer, who did not provide any details about the number of Blowfish currently in service with the PLAN, showcased a model of the electric-powered 1.75 m-long platform at the show carrying three missile-like projectiles.

According to Ziyan, the Blowfish I has a maximum take-off weight of between 28 and 50 kg and an endurance of between 45 to 60 minutes. The UAV can reach an altitude of 5,100 m and carry a payload of between 7 and 12 kg, excluding its electro-optical system. Officials at the show told Jane’s that the UAV can also be equipped with anti-personnel grenades and be modified to deploy small sonobuoys upon customer request.
