I saw this at PakDef, posted by LKJ86. Not sure if the picture is new, but it could be of new 056s to come.

After a year of fanfare in 2017 when most of the Chinese warships entered service almost all covered the local press, instructions seem to have been given since this year to remain discreet about the official broadcast for such events. It is therefore on a government account rarely followed that we learn between the lines the admission to active service of a new corvette Type 056 by the Chinese Navy a week ago.

According to an article published June 5 on the Weixin account of the civil administration of the city of Nanchang, an official delegation sent by the city hall arrived June 1 at a certain naval base in Guangdong to "salute and pay tribute to the Nanchong ship's crew .

No detail was given except for this sentence but according to the photo broadcast, it is indeed a ceremony of admission to the active service of the Chinese Navy and a corvette Type 056 was present there.

Corvette 557 Nanchong, admitted to active service on June 1, 2018 in Xinhui (Photo: 南充 民政)

The building in question is actually the 557 Nanchong , the 9th Corvette Type 056 built at Wuchang Shipyard and which was launched on January 27, 2017. The ship began testing at sea in July, near Shanghai. but since that date no news has been filtered about his movements so far.

The sources indicate that this 41st Corvette Type 056 for the Chinese Navy joined the 17th frigate flotilla based at Xinhui Naval Base, Southern Fleet. This building displacing 1 340 tons is besides the second corvette of anti-submarine fight (thus Type 056A) of this unit, the first being the 551 Suining admitted to active service on November 28, 2017.

Note that the 557 Nanchong should have, according to the statistics of the program at Wuchang shipyard, join the ranks in early April this year, but finally it is almost two months late that this entry into service had place.

The Chinese Navy has already admitted to active service three corvettes of this class since January 1, and two more are expected before the end of the year. With at most five Type 056 corvettes made active in 2018, the program is making one of its worst "scores" since 2013, knowing that the number of new class ships that join the Chinese navy is rather between 7 and 10 a year.

For the simple fact, it is noted that it is the second warship of the Chinese Navy that uses the name of the city of Nanchong. The first was the Type 65 Nanchong 502 frigate , which had participated in the altercation between the Chinese and Vietnamese naval forces in March 1988.

During this battle that caused the loss of several dozen lives and three ships on the Vietnamese side, and no Chinese side, the former frigate Nanchong alone sank an opposing ship in 8 minutes while seriously wounding another (the latter eventually ran aground at the end).

Good analysis here's my PLAN update which is pretty much a summary from Henri K blog

2016 25 warships commissioned
2017 16 warships commissioned and 16 launched
2018 so far 8 warships commissioned and 12 launched

last 30 months 49 warships commissioned that's around 1.5 warships per month

launch rate is similar

btw can anyone on that blog find how many warships launched in 2016? Since its in FRENCH!!

The blog post above shows the problem for us. The wall climbers are no longer active because of the fear of procecution. The media in China no longer reports on commissionings as they use to do. I remember last year when every commissioning of a new ship or a new Z-10 unit was reported on in the media. This year nothing. Its now so quiet on the Z-10 front that I don't even know if that helicopter is still in production! Most likely it is.

China should end the production of the Type 054A and the Type 056 after the current run ends. And focus solely on the Type 055 and the Type 052D. There are more than enough Type 054A's and Type 056's for whatever brown and green water tasks the PLAN has in mind.

And does anyone have a update on the Type 037 fleet ? How many are there still left ?

054Bs are already confirmed in the pipeline. the 054A is good, but Navy certainly still has a need for a more modern, more capable frigate in the 054A weight class or thereabouts.

056s will likely to continue for a little while too; henri has stated 60 ships fairly consistently.

I wouldn't be surprised if 056 production ends by 2020, but large destroyer, destroyer and frigate production all look like they're going to continue for a while yet.
