When I first saw the 056 model, my thought was that it looks very different from the Pattani class OPV sold to Thailand:


Then I saw the FL-3000N and thought maybe we'd actually see the product, instead of just conceptual models.

I'd speculate that the 056 will be slightly cheaper than the F-22P. VLS systems are expensive, so the 056 will be an inexpensive alternative to the 054A. The PLAN has many old 053 light frigates and it'd be too expensive to replace them on 1:1 ratio with 054A's. I think there are some 30 type 053 frigates still in service? If the PLAN can build couple dozen 056's and transfer 053's to Coast Guard service, that would be an inexpensive route to modernize the patrol fleet and increase CG fleet size.

What is the endurance specs of the 053? I'm wondering given their age, is it even worth transferring over to the CG. Two were transferred over but then we are now seeing a spurt in CG dedicated vessels being built and launched.

Maybe refit and donate to a smaller country as soft power diplomacy?

The 2 ships transferred to Coast Guard service was 509 Changde and 510 Shaoxing. They were from the first batch of Jianghu-I prdouction (oldest). The other Jianghu ships in service are likely to be newer, others on the forum can verify this:



IMO China's Coast Guard service doesn't have enough cutters, even with the recent additions. Refurb 053's can serve that role inexpensively. Although the 053 doesn't have avaiation facilities, the aft deck area could accomodate small helicopter UAV's with U8E specs (220 kg only) for surveillance operations. The U8E doesn't have MQ-8's endurance, but it's smaller, lighter, and cheaper. But, looking at past history, I doubt they'd spend a lot of $$ on old ship refurbs.



The 056 doesn't have a helicopter hanger, but I think it's possible to accomodate small UAV storage. Look at the Germany Navy's K130 Corvette, they're built with hanger for 2 x S-100 UAV's:

The new cutters are all for cms and flec. The 053s all got converted for maritime police. So I think motte 053 could be converted for maritime police fleet. As for 056, I personally would like to see it follow the path of k130, but we will see.

It seems underarmed without an AA gun, not even an AK630.

Really That is what the big gun infront of the ship are for. They double duty as AA gun Plus it has better AA than AK 630. That is the square thing in the back It is called FL3000 if you follow the thread

It appears to be in the same class as the Russian Tarantul. Having a helicopter is an advantage, but is 4 anti-ship missiles enough? Would it be possible to put in 4 more just in front of the helicopter landing pad?

Err the tarantul class is barely 600 tons in displacement where as 056 is supposedly going to be 1000-1500 tons. In quite a different class me think. (missile boat vs corvette)
