Type 054 #525 MLU update. Note that HQ7 had been replaced by HQ10. No VLS.

So it is likely to remain as a patrol frigate, with no area air defense capability.

Replacing the HQ7 with a smaller HQ10? HQ7 can engage targets up to 15km, the HQ10 9km. The HQ7 im gessing also has a larger warhead.
I know the HQ10 is a more modern system, but is it really any better?

Could be to reduce logistical issues with acquiring older missiles which might not be manufactured anymore.
The HQ10 is used in so many ships there should be plenty of parts and missiles for it.

Also, the specs in terms of range, etc, of the original HQ7 (like on Type 054) aren't that much better than HQ10. It is HQ7B which has improved specs.

24 missiles vs. 8 missiles + 16 missile reload. HQ-10 should be reloaded by hand if the launcher runs out.

HQ-7 is much more cumbersome, complex and weighty. For more than 8 missiles, you would require this reload.

HQ-7 also requires a dedicated radar set for guidance. The radar set tracks the target and sends data to the missile. This limits the number of missiles you can guide and the risk of interference between the missile and the radar.

HQ-10 doesn't need that. Each missile is launched and guided autonomously. Its fire and forget. The missiles home in on the target's heat and radar emissions.

Close up on some parts.

Is that a CIWS to the left? That's the logical place for it but the shape of the covering doesn't match. Might be a decoy launcher, or the same decoy launcher they have used before.

I was expecting a radar in that pedestal to the right. This used for a Type 347 or 349 radar and that's probably the same thing now. Probably has TV camera to the right. This radar is fire control for the four AK-630 or H/PJ-13 not sure what the name for the Chinese variant is, the one with the stealth turret.

Flat panel SATCOM near the radar was installed prior, perhaps around 2017. It wasn't removed in the refit. Its position differs on Frigate 526 where the SATCOM is more to the rear.

This photo was from 2019, showing a black "platform" similar to VLS, did they initially wanted to install a VLS and later decided not to go ahead after some evaluation?

That's probably the ramp for the HQ-7's reloader.

HQ-10 launcher does not mean there is no VLS behind it, like here.

But the direction of the VLS as it lays with its longest dimension would have to be port to starboard, instead of fore to aft. However it would only mean you have 16 missiles instead of 32.

The HQ-10 launcher would have to be installed right at the turntable used by the HQ-7 launcher, similar to why the HQ-10 launcher is installed on the turntable for the Shtil launcher on 136 Hanzhou.

There is space for 8 or 16 VLS at the back of the HQ-10 --- which is the position where the HQ-7 launcher is sitting--- , but lift off is close to the bridge windows.

I think they are building enough new 054A not to push with this.

At this point, I'm more interested to know if they are retaining the 100mm gun or go with the 76mm. They already made some changes to the platforms where the Type 345 radar and the Type 344 radar is sitting. The 345 radar has been taken out and the lip underneath it has already been cut. The 344 radar has been removed and the stand below it has been already lowered. If they put a Type 347 radar on the remaining platform, its going to be a 76mm gun they are putting, but if they returned the Type 344 radar, then its the old gun that is coming back.

An update on 525. A HQ-10 launcher has been installed on the platform just before the bridge.
