Lieutenant General
Rumours of Type 054B are kicking off again

Seems like some sketches are also circulating

The timing is interesting

Let's see what comes of it

Could we see first new unit by 2017?

yeah I heard 054B will be full IEP, 5000 ton, seems a bit far fetched.
IEP is not far-fetched since big shrimps have been whispering this for a while. The 5,000 tons is speculative but also not far-fetched IMO, especially if the bigger bulk is being used to switch VL systems over from the HHQ-16-style modules to the UVLS-style modules and/or to mount fixed-panel AESAs.

In the past IEP was applied to much larger ships, so I am suspicious. I can see 052D go full IEP but 054B seems a bit too small for it.

IEP is not just for big ships. Its a whole system of its own that is meant to bring efficiencies. Maybe they want to test on 54B before putting it on future 52 or 55.

It'd would be great to see improved ASW capabilities on the 54Bs, would enhance their capabilities as escort / picket vessels and plug a vital gap in fleet defense. The 052D's provide very solid fleet AD, and the 055s pack a good all around punch, but the current fleet is a little lacking in defending against subsurface threats.

It would be nice if 054B supported two helicopters for improved ASW coverage/availability, but I think the higher priority is just getting a more capable ASW helicopter design into service in the first place, whether based on Z-15 or Z-20.
