Ah yes, the 052DE is now a "large frigate".
Still - Much, way much better than Japan's 26000-ton flatdeck "mUlTi-PuRpOsE dEsTrOyEr" and Germany's 12000-ton "fRiGaTe"

Hey, if the "frigate" label means an easier sell to foreign procurement committees, I would gladly call an export Type 055 a "12,000-ton guided missile large frigate", or an export Type 003 an "80,000-ton multi-purpose aviation large frigate", any day.
Take that, Japan and your "helicopter destroyers"!

That’s what I have evening thinking. Instead of developing a new generation of large frigates like 054B with all the fancy new techs, why not just keep on producing 052Ds which is be probably cheaper per unit considering so many have been produced already and all the development costs have been recovered by now. Most importantly 052D is simply a way more capable ship than the much smaller 054B.
Because it's not a frigate with fancy new tech. This sort of thinking is essentially why US Constellation-Class frigate just ended up being a mini burke, instead of being a dedicate frigate.
Because 052D has a lot of capabilities (and the costs associated with them) that are not needed in a frigate.
