052C/052D Class Destroyers

Some cool images from a recent exercise showing the moment chaff cartridges from a 052C exploded in mid-air. You can see the tiny parachutes attached to the cartridges.

Another image of parachute-deployed countermeasures.

It seems this is the new modified 052DM, than the previously thought 055 we had on 055 thread.

It looks like the 052DM superstructure is modified. So both Dalian and Jiangnan now produce 052D, guess both are the new 052D.

How will it be modified? The most feasible way is to create an integrated mast that will contain a fixed four sided X-band AESA radar, replacing the Type 344, 364, and 366 mechanical radars used on the previous ships. This turns the 052X into a mini 055 with dual S and X quad fixed sided radars.

Stop quoting that idiot.
But the analysis is direct copied from "大包CG" 's weibo. 大包CG has also given some photos analysis. It is clear that the bridge part is a bit different from normal 052D or 055. It seems that there is still some credibility.

August 21 posting by @Sheleah on Dalian has superstructure modules already set aside at the side of the picture.

See the sides of the picture.

It's not the same superstructure design of the old 052D, but it's not like what the artist rendered. You can see smaller square holes for a smaller phase array which is just right for an X-band fire control radar, mainly for engagement against near and surface targets.

Instead of the dual radars set side by side, the smaller likely X band AESA is set higher and on top of the S-band. This makes more sense as it gives the X-band a higher radar horizon. The artist CG design would have positionally lowered the X-band radars to a point they will have an inferior radar horizon range over the legacy mechanical radar positions.

The Dalian and Jiangnan images of the superstructure indicates there is no large hole on the center of the roof. This hole is supposed to be where the Type 366 radar radome is supposed to be, the big half capsule on top of the bridge. Unless they plan to cut a hole out, which is completely inelegant, the 366 antiship radar is gone, so this is another good indication the radar configuration has changed.

The CG doesn't explain why the design has two pyramid stacks on the Jiangnan image. The lower pyramid should support the large S-band radar while the higher pyramid supports the smaller X-band radar.

It will still have a mast though for the ESM thingies, but there is a question if they will still top it off with a Type 364 replacement like the small dual sided Type '368'. That maybe pushing it in terms of cost and complexity however.

The new superstructure design suggests a ship neither 055 nor 052D. Although we need to get more detailed images I am leaning towards a new variant of the 052D. Maybe with this change it will be the long speculated 052E.

Such arrangement of the S and X panels will raise the height of the superstructure, adding top weight. To compensate it will be required to remove something from the top of the superstructure.
