I suspect "air surveillance" is used differently compared to "volume search", and implies a very general meaning similar (or identical) to "early warning" in which you will be able to detect an object at long range but only have a very rough idea of where it is due to the low frequency/low tech radar that is being used for this purpose. Maybe it should be thought of as a poor man's volume search.

From the looks of the cutaway, that area is free of machinery spaces. It should be living quarters underneath, along with whatever is needed to support the radar. You can redesign that and move those somewhere else. If you really need the living and storage spaces, you can extend the length of the ship. The block module that comprises the area --- remember the ship is built in blocks and sections, can be made longer with 64 VLS, while the remaining blocks still stay the same.

There are definitely machinery spaces there, namely the diesels. You can tell by the uptakes that are built into the aft mast. This area almost certainly cannot be relocated.

End of February shows two Type 052D on fitting.

End of March or early April shows only one Type 052D in the same spot where there used to be two. I would assume that one of them has left the shipyard. Also noted that there is a third Type 052D on the dock on the satellite image, but on the latest image is also no longer there. That may either have left the shipyard, or is the same Type 052D across the Type 055; the previous two units in that position may have left the yard.

Some correction. The satellite image on late February as seen above has four Type 052D in that area. There is another Type 052D near where #2 Type 055 is being constructed under the shed.

The latest photo, now from an angle, now shows only one.

I don't think you are looking at the satellite photo correctly. On the water, not counting ships being assembled in the large sheds where you have two 055s, are one 055, and three 052D. A fourth 052D is in the drydock. This is the status as of late February.

On the second set of photographs, done with telephoto lens, only one 052D remains. This is the status as of early Spring.

So obviously there are some movement in the assets. My assumption on this is that three of the 052Ds that were fitting last February, has left the shipyard and has gone to sea for trials.
