Looks like 052D does indeed use the same newer type of console as 056 class. Expected stuff, excellent.

I wish we could get a sense of just what the arrangement of the CIC is like, with a wider spanning shot. The latter four 052Cs seem to have about twenty four consoles with two large main displays in its CIC -- I expect 052Ds to match that, at least.

Fishing for 052D? :D The photographer was purely intentional with this shot blocking the hull number with the two guys. People are guessing this is 174? (From haohanfw 无乜礁.)

Could be.

We know that 172 and 173 are already in service and 174 has been on trials and should be commissioned before the end of the year.

At least that is my understanding.

I expect three more will be commissioned in 2016, three more in 2017, etc.

If the PLAN continues at that rate with the Type 052Ds, then by January 1st 2020, the PLAN will have 6 Type 052Cs and perhaps 15 Type 052Ds...twenty-one very modern, very capable multi-role, area air defense destroyers.

Also important will be the production and commissioning of 054As and a successor frigate class... As well as the first few 055s. It will be very interesting to see how navies in the region adapt to the chinese navy as it grows.

I only can see two countries in the region could "compete" somewhat with PLAN, SK and Japan ... for the rest countries in the region? they simply couldn't afford it ... the choice for them is either embrace China or closer to the US or perhaps both (like Singapore)

I don't want to get into too detailed of a comparison, but alone, I do not think the JMSDF or ROKN can match the displacement of modern surface combatants the Chinese Navy will probably be able to have in service by 2020, given the announced procurements that the Japanese and South Koreans have both stated for the next few years, alongside what we currently project for the Chinese. Even lumping the displacements of modern surface combatants of both JMSDF and ROKN together may not quite match the kind of displacement that the Chinese will be pumping out by that time.

Of course, it'll take the Chinese Navy a number of years to fully be comfortable with operating their new vessels in a fully capable way given the dramatic nature of this modernization and expansion, and all sides will have very capable SSK fleets and what not... but purely in terms of the displacement of modern surface combatants, I think by 2020 a clear margin of difference will begin to exist and may grow significantly bigger once we fully enter the 2020s, if the Chinese Navy really does intend to build a full 24 052Ds as well as a successor to 054A that may be produced in large numbers, and possibly even 24 055s as some rumours have said... assuming no dramatic conflict or significant economic slowdown occurs.

totally agree. That's why I intentionally put - "compete" somewhat " -
In term technology, both Japan and SK could match and even surpass in a few areas ... of course they simply couldn't match the quantity of modern PLAN ships.

Other countries in the region simply couldn't match the technology and quantity of PLAN modern ships
