Wait.. if you were going by municipalities then they should be : Beijing, Chongqing, Shanghai, Tianjin.

That would be cool, too.

I thought carriers are named after COASTAL provinces. LHA named after interior or smaller provinces. I doubt the change in power plant confers much significance. I am guessing JIANGSU, GUANGDONG, or ZHEJIANG (in this order).

human names are 100% no way, this is from Mao himself I believe.

if they want to go with non-geographical names, they can always use 'imperial'/‘mythological’ names but it is likely this would be rejected both for comparison to 2 failed navies: Qing Dynasty and Imperial Japan, which had similar naming schemes.

I am 99.9% sure PLAN will stick with geographical names. I think they'll make it a big one of either significant historical or current importance. So it's either Beijing/Guangdong or Shaanxi like you said. One interesting one is Chongqing which represented China's resistance capital in WW2.
What about naming after battles, animals/fish or adjectives e.g. Brave, Daring, Audacious (that's just the RN - which also had a whole class of 26 FFG named after characters from Greek mythology, the Leander class). In fact I think the RN still leads the world in warship naming (providing they do not resurrect HMS Pansy or HMS Cockchafer!).

It is not just the RN. The Russians use adjectives for their corvettes.
Guarding, Savvy, Glib, Persistent, Strict, Perfect, Loud, Sharp, Terrible, Gallant, Thundering, Nimble, Rampant, Reasonable, Quick, Smashing, Daring

Guangxi and Hainan are coastal provinces, but they are named on 075 LHDs.

Though I still remember that when the name for the 2nd 075 was announced, people from Guangxi were angry because their province lost the chance to be named on a proper carrier. XD

I thought the process was whichever province wins a bidding competition for taking care of the crew and families (financial support like scholarships, loans, etc.) of that carrier gets to have its name used? There was originally speculation the 3rd carrier would've been named Jiangsu but it ended up being Fujian.

Unfortunately mythology and adjectives fits into the Qing/Imperial Japanese category, which is bad luck for obvious reasons.

For instance 瑞鹤, the great crane, would be a good name... Except it was the name of a Japanese carrier that was used to war crime then got sunk in WW2 and nobody wants to do that. Between the Qing and the Imperial Japanese alot of the mythological names got used poorly.

The same can also be said for some Soviet/Russian frigates and destroyers.

The Sovremenny-class destroyers (of which 4 are currently in service with the PLAN) literally means "modern" or "contemporary". In Chinese, they are referred to as 现代级驱逐舰.

If this was true, places like Anshan (103) and Lhasa (102) would never be able to be named for 055.
@luosifen meant that for provinces, not cities. Which means it is very likely that only the flatdecks, i.e. CVs and LHDs would have such requirements.

Lhasa and Anshan are cities, not provinces.
