I've not been following the thread from the beginning of Popeye's many voyages, but I'm keen to read about the his anecdotes of r&r experience after the fleet pull up at ports. Food, shopping....etc.

I'm sorry to say t2, but freedom and good manners, demand that many of Popeye's and Mates extra-vehicular activity must remain classified, "Eyes Only"...........

I can guess. About sixteen years ago, a retired local who served on the RN as a captain and now an octogenarian collecting pension told me about their exploits in post-war Japan. He did not go into the details, but talked more about the Japanese women. Popeye has a different orientation now, away from the wake.

Re: Today's US Navy Photos, Videos & News!

The Photo reminds me of the time when I was on active service on board a Minesweeper in the 1960s. My CO, a RAN seconded Lt-Cdr ordered me to get the young sailors (wearing life jackets) into the water, by "encouraging" (meaning push) those who were hesitant. After the sailors went into the water, the CO and others had a damn good laugh at my expense, as the Aussie Cdr unexpectedly pushed me overboard (without me wearing a life jacket). Thank goodness its was a minesweeper then, & not an aircraft carrier ;)) Ahhhhhh! the good old days, I really miss them.

Re: PLAN Aircraft Carrier programme..News & Views

The Kutz class (Liaoning) do not have opening on the stern or fantail to test jet engines. The best they could do is to tie down on the aft elevators for testing the jets. My guess is they will do it in extreme cases but probably not on a regular basis like USN but they may not need to because Liaoning probably won't venture too far off into the other side of the world like USN carriers. Home port is probably not too far away at most times.

Old Salt rant;

I remember working night check and that stinkin' VAQ-133 use to test their engines on the angle deck on America. Those Prowlers are louder than any other aircraft aboard the ship. My shop was on the 02 level under the island and those Prowlers make such a racket they can drown out anything..

End Old Salt rant.

Popeye's Navy rant..

I see we have some comedians here at SDF..That's cool

Proverbs 17:22Amplified Bible (AMP)

22 A happy heart is good medicine and a cheerful mind works healing, but a broken spirit dries up the bones.

In all honesty and sincerity going to sea is no joking matter. Your wife and kids are not their. Your mommie won't tuck you in at night. You can't raid the fridge in the middle of the night..or day depending on what shift you work. You have to stand watches when you are susposed to be sleeping. The 1MC (loudspearker) is making announcements....all day..

You have to work 12 hours on and 12 hours off.. many shipmates work much more than that. Day after day..night after night. That's the real "Ground hog day".. And there's drills.. General Quarters, Fire drills, mass casualty drills etc..etc.. Oh let's not forget UNREPs..now called RAS, replenishment at Sea. And let's us not forget the working parties for mail ,unreps , flight & hangar deck "scrubex"..and the list goes on..

If you are lower ranked enlisted.. I hope you like standing in line. On Hancock I hadda stand in line to take a shower some times. Lines for the ships stores, chow, barber shop, sick call.. especially after a port call in a port where, shall I say, the natives are friendly.

Oh there are fun times..video games , movies on Tv, gyms, bingo all sorts of tournaments...but it's not Fun city. No way.

No half steppin' allowed, Trust me ..It ain't no joke.

Rant over

Gotta comment on that this video..

First off it's USS George H W Bush..not USS Bush..jeezz..

.... see those red shirts those shipmates are wearing? Back in "da' day" I wore a red shirt with big black letters.. Over the years it stated the various divisions I was assigned to.

AM DIV....Air Missile Division USS John F Kennedy (CVA 67)
G DIV HGR DK....G Division Hangar Deck Crew USS John F Kennedy (CVA 67)
GM Division.....Guided Missile Division USS Midway (CVA 41)
GM FLT DK....Guided Missile Division Flight Deck crew USS Midway (CVA 41)
G DIV FLT DK....G Division Flight Deck crew USS Hancock (CVA 19)
VS-33 ORD....VS-33 Ordnance USS America (CV 66)

Yep..AND back in my day zero females aboard carriers... ZERO.

Now the shipmates picture in the second video work bomb assembly. which is now located in the old 4th deck
"Special Weapons" magazines. Before the USN nuclear delivery mission was removed from Carriers bombs were built on the forward or aft mess decks.. a real inconvenience.. but it manged to work some how.

Now back in the day the shipmates that worked Bomb Assembly wore red shirt emblazed with;

G DIV
Bomb ASSY

No foolin'...

In another forum someone commented the oldest person in his platoon was called old man because he was 24...I want to be blessed with my 24 year old body...right now!

Old man Waugh in my platoon was 24. We still call him old man.

Thanks for the comments gents..

When I was aboard Nimitz in '91 for my final tour of sea duty making my seventh major deployment the young sailors called me "Sea Pappy" .. after Popeye's pop! Who's name was actually Poop Deck Pappy. I was only 37 years old...
