Time to finally break the news to y'all, gentlemen.
There's been an increasing amount of evidence to suggest that the 002 will use electromagnetic catapults rather than steam catapults. However, I refrained from posting any of that here because I felt that most of the evidence is rather insignificant, though much of it is reasonable and certainly was more compelling than the arguments for steam catapults, about which we've received no news for the past few months.
Today, I finally came across something a bit more convincing than just poking at satellite imagery and crafting elaborate theories. This somehow snuck its way into a Sichuanese TV channel's broadcast:
Translated: Aircraft carrier electromagnetic catapult material, representative type: Mn18Cr18N.
As mentioned by someone in the source thread, Mn18Cr18N is an austenitic, non-magnetic stainless steel. It's not a particularly uncommon alloy. What I'd like to emphasize is the fact that we have a source that specifies what type of steel will be used in electromagnetic catapult construction, in addition to what's already been leaked over the past few weeks.
This, plus the other tidbits of evidence that's been circulating around the Chinese forums, only serves to reinforce the belief that the 002 will feature electromagnetic catapults. I'm not going to be making predictions just yet, but if I had to guess between steam and electromagnetic, it would be the latter.
