AMLO has some huge balls to say this at the US Summit for Democracy
For example, how can we speak of democracy if the elites dominate and not the majorities? How can we speak of democracy if there is no separation of economic and political power? How can we speak of democracy if in recent times there has been the most offensive concentration of wealth in a few hands in the history of the world. The fortune of a minority has increased without limits, without any moral compunction, while there are a billion human beings living on less than $1 a day."

By saying the bold texts he grasps the very fundamental idea of Marxism even though he is not a communist party member.

Seriously, the RESTRICT Act and DATA Act are no laughing matters. They are really Trojan horses to steal your right of privacy , freedom of expression, and a step toward totalitarian, and once passed, it will be difficult to repeal them.

Some people on Weibo thought that it was so over the top stupid that they thought they needed to improve their English skills for misinterpreting the text.

Pettis is either disingenuous, or really intellectually lazy.
90% of HSR criticisms are just anti-communist and orientalist nonsense. Americans are lucky their ancestors didn't have the same mentality. They would be using unpaved roads otherwise. And yes I think HSR is a much better solution than building a lot of roads for a lot of cars AKA subsidizing private property with tax money. And do I need to talk about how airlines need subsidies to survive in every single economic crisis?

It allows any product from any country to be banned without any explanation. Any product that uses electricity fits the bill and the expectation of it reaching more than 100,000 users is enough. The penalty for violation is up to 20 years in prison. Can not be challenged in court because the govt doesn't have to disclose anything. So you can't have any arguments you can use for sueing. This is literally stuff from Radio Free Asia North Korea stories. You remember those fake stories about people getting jailed for cutting their hair like Kim Jong Un?

Yes. Better and freer states where there is a war for the most minor of things due to hyper instability, while other states are stuck in permanent poverty due to bad geography, low population or a mixture of both. You know in Australia a clown gets paid $67,418 per year, yet this guy does it for free.

By cognitive dissonance, I'm referring to the fact that it's much more difficult to stay in the US compared to Canada (and I assume Australia?). Therefore, the Chinese who live in US need to find more reasons to justify their prior sacrifices or ongoing hardship. The most obvious way to do so is to cast aspersions on life in China. If they can convince themselves that life in China sucks, they can feel better about the choice they made to immigrate to the US.
I see the kind of change in persons from before to after switching citizenship. Not saying citizenship means something special, but the switching of it means cutting the link to China forever. People have to give a good reason for that big change. The people I know joined the 2008 demonstration, waiving the flag, then 4 years later after switching the passport, they blame everything on China for the deterioration of relationship between China and the west.

So China's past being hard and poor or today's better life isn't necessarily the only excuse people seek, but anything that can justify their past choice. Basically people are afraid to be "wrong and regret". One guy joked of his changing passport by saying "I hope my child won't blame me for it when he grow up".
