Since Covid, the South Korean hate for China just skyrocketed. Many willingly fell for the US propaganda and blamed the Chinese for Covid. But for me, the root cause for that hate, I believe is an identity crisis. Many South Koreans for decade have enjoyed being the #2 most advanced East Asian, behind the Japanese. During those years, their true rival was Japan, hence they hate Japan intensely then. The Chinese at that time were regarded as lower-class East Asians whose purpose is to serve the more advanced South Koreans. Low threat, but also not to be respected. Kinda like a South Korean version of caste-based racism. I've read this kind of view from a number of Korean opinion pieces, and social media.

Many South Koreans worship the Americans like god. They aspire to be at the same level as the Americans, thereby becoming more 'advanced' than the other East Asians. They have shamelessly culturally appropriated many of American culture like music, films, Halloween, food, and Christianity. They shamelessly adopt the American Corndog, while raging at the Chinese for rightfully classifying Kimchi as a version of pao cai. They shamelessly copy American fashion, while hating the Chinese for appreciating the hanbok worn by the Chinese Koreans. In the last 5 years, I have seen South Korean films bashing China much more than Japan. That means that they have have already shifted their hate from Japan onto China.

The South Koreans now view the Chinese as an existential threat, because of their identity crisis. The Chinese have much greater history than Korea. While a big part of Korean history was becoming a vassal state of China, and a colony of Japan. The 21st century was supposed to be South Korea's chance to forge their own glorious history. But they mistakenly thought that they can forge a glorious history by becoming a vassal and facsimile of the Americans. Nevertheless the Chinese have caught up fast, and are now practically on par with them. The Chinese are also challenging the hegemony of Americans, their patron. This shocks and infuriates the South Koreans, as their position as the 'greatest of the East Asians' is now under threat by the very people they thought, whose era is over.

I think that by doubling down on America, and hating the Chinese, the South Koreans are dooming themselves. They are blinded by superiority complex and are following a dying Superpower. In time, they'll be left behind by the Chinese. I dislike SK, but in the meantime, they are still a very competent nation. Their industries are very competitive, their shipbuilding is still world leading, and their defense industry is quite formidable. My only concern now is that South Korea might be heading on a path to fascism. Could the hate reach to a boiling point, that South Korea finally abandons its 'neutral position' against China and starts to threaten China directly? Not likely, but not impossible also, as the Yoon government is still evolving, and has many years to go on too.

Nevertheless, we must not turn to hating the Koreans as a whole. The North Koreans are friendly to the Chinese, and the Korean Chinese are proud citizens of the PRC. They have not been corrupted by Western racist culture. Plus, there are still a number of decent South Koreans living in China. It is unfortunate that their home country have become like that.

P.S.: I have not actively boycotted South Korean products. But I have stopped buying Samsung, and many other high profile brands. They seemed quite arrogant for me. I have also mostly stopped watching Korean films. They are no longer as entertaining anymore. Nowadays, they feel too 'American'. I don't listen to any K-pop rubbish, but I used to observe millennials going crazy about K-pop. Nowadays though, they have grown bored of K-pop and have moved on to Japanese Anime and Chinese pop culture. How funny.
Fully agreed. Can you give some major examples of Chinese pop culture that have caught on with millennials? And which countries' millennials?

Well bro, I was given a preview when my children and their friends, yes the Gen Z crowd was googling and excited about Chinese artist and their songs. From them I was introduce to Singer 2018 and was amazed about those Chinese talents and want to listen more Chinese songs. That is a game changer for me, I have a dated view of Chinese music scene , growing up I was a massive Beatles Fan and lover of New Wave music, now modern pop music had stalled, with the same song and dance routine it had become boring. The commercialization had destroyed its soul and the music sound bland.

Funny enough South Korea seems to be degrading itself more and more day by day. It’s almost ripe for a time when China will one day come back to finish the job started during the Korean War. The thing with South Korea is that their empathy seems to be none existent and I place the USA as being responsible for this kind of rot if not enhancing it to such heights, it’s almost begging to karma to come for them sooner or later. Hence is seems somewhat funny watching their entire world crumple to pieces slowly but surely. I don’t mind their products much (credit where it is due) but I will watch with delight when China finally manages to exceed what the Koreans can do with all this US backing. I mean I once enjoy watching Japanese shows in the past but I eventually got bored of them an ceased caring about it (I mean most of their video games suck right now and seems to have no chance of innovation in the near future) and I believe Korea will eventually follow suit given a similar rot is happening (I mean their movies are simply emulating American gore and horror for crying out loud, gezzz way to emulate American Christian values if you think about it). So once China comes to the point where they displace Korea as well as Japan (I mean Genshin is just to start), I will have little interest in either nations moving forward. Losers that side with a big loser will eventually jump ship to be under the boots of someone stronger any way once that big loser falls.

No need to consider them as anything special at the end of it all, all of their advances is not innovation, but simply copying others anyway. I mean all these years, they should have a stronger military then China due to the head start but they grew fat and stupid and thus will eventually return to its original position all those years ago, of their own choosing due to having no real agency of there own.

Has anyone noticed how South Korea loves to copy everything and consider it there’s, funny how anyone thinks they can seriously innovate I mean a lot of their food shows how they seem to love copying American cuisine nowadays with literally no change to what they have originally. Yet their restaurants seem to end up on the top Asian reviews whereas not of Chinas seem to end up on those list, kinda makes me want to laugh when the USA goes mad max if only for China to forcefully rewrite the standard, I mean western dominance is making both Korea and Japan become a bunch of cowardly pussies ( and anyone who sees how these people act even in the work place can easily see that I am right)

Isn't the rise of China's economy by far the main reason why South Koreans hate China? Leading South Korean companies are being threatened by Chinese companies on almost every front.

In the display industry, Samsung and LG are being threatened by BOE.
In the television industry, Samsung and LG are being threatened by TCL and Hisense.
In the electric appliances industry, Samsung and LG are being threatened by Haier and Midea.
In the memory industry, Samsung and SK Hynix are being threatened by YMTC.
In the car industry, Hyundai and Kia are being threatened by BYD.
In the battery industry, LG has fallen behind CATL and BYD.
In the shipbuilding industry, South Korean companies have been overtaken by Chinese companies.
In the telecommunications industry, Samsung still cannot compete with Huawei and ZTE even though the latter two have been sanctioned by the US.
In the smartphone industry, Samsung is threatened by Oppo, Vivo, OnePlus, and Xiaomi.

I don't think it would be a stretch to say that the majority of high-paying jobs in South Korea are being threatened by China's rise. To me, this is the only factor that matters when considering South Korea's hatred of China.

Good. It's their destiny to eventually become the next Japan after China is finished eating their lunch in chips and ships (within the next 10-15 years):
1) Economy mostly driven just by entertainment production and tourism
2) Giant parking lot for US military
3) Giant brothel

Great explanation. Thanks for that. I haven't kept up with Thai politics since thaksin days. Their family as you correctly said are not anti china. both him and Yingluck made well publicized visits to china during their heydays or right after. With both cultural and political significance.

It does seem like thais in general have positive feelings towards china, same with Indonesians and Singaporeans.

I'm abit baffled with the chart though. You expect Pakistan , Japan , Australia to be where they are . But why in earth Koreans are biggest haters lol. They are even above those countries with actual territorial disputes with china.
Has anybody been able to find the raw data from this think tank?

I find it strange how these think tanks always post suggestive graphs but never show their actual polling results.

I would really like to see the approval-disapproval actual numbers for every country.
