According to a military official from another Asian country, one focus area in the Chinese military’s balloon flights in recent years is to collect data that can enhance the accuracy of over-the horizon and other radar systems used for targeting in wartime.
Military analysts said data points such as atmospheric density would help the PLA develop software tools known as advanced refractive effects prediction systems, which are key for advanced radars that aid missile, air and naval operations.
“They are likely to be making rapid advances in this now given the recent steep increase in the frequency and range of such balloon flights,”

Their level of spin that their media tries to vomit out is so unbelievably repugnant. They literally describe the first and most basic function of A FUCKING WEATHER BALLOON and still tries to claim its military surveillance.

These "journalists" should all be shot in the back of the head with a smoothbore rifle to see if the bullet spins on the way out of their skulls.

So it's indeed a "weather" balloon then...

Nah, should be body slammed until they're tender enough for a skillet.

It's still a 4th gen balloon, so you need a wingman just to be safe and sure.
Seriously, an attempt to take down a Chinese balloon requires reinforcements, da faq is wrong with these people, by that logic, they will require the entire US navy to be sent to Taiwan to protect them against China, leaving themselves wide open from a bear attack from the back door…. Must be careful not to get bitten in the ass…. I mean look at poor Zelensky…. Crying like a coked up baby…. When he had about more then 41 countries take to pick up his dummy, yet he is still ungrateful as hell

It would be one hell of a OTH radar to reach the continental USA:)

Besides at OTH ranges it will be detection/acquisition rather than targeting for moving targets.

But hey, why not just pump out random scare stories!

If you believe half of the crap that comes out about the PLA then NATO, Japan and the USA should just raise the white flag because them Commie death rays are just going fry you all! or on the flip side their stuff doesn't work and China will be bombed back to the stone age in a fortnight!

Not only did they use a F-22 to shoot down a balloon, it had F-15s as support. You never know what a rascally Chinese balloon will do.

I am maybe overanalyzing it but this balloon incident is evidence of the US being a sh*tshow on multiple levels.

1- Why they couldn't shut it down before it entered their airspace and was floating throughout the country? If it was an ISR platform, they spectacularly failed. If it was not, then they shot down a harmless civilian aircraft. The latter is likely the case.

2- The US military's reaction was absurd. How many sorties did they launch? We don't know. But we know they had 3 tankers in patrol most of the time. That is a lot of flight hours flown by a lot of aircraft. It feels like middle-ranking commanders are trying to get promoted by showing their merits. This shouldn't be the case. Using national resources to advance your career is corruption.

3- It feels like the Biden admin and Pentagon were against having talks with China. They needed a scapegoat to indefinitely postpone the meeting and look tough (looking tough is the holy grail of modern anglosphere politics). But thanks to Republicans being tougher and the hysteria of Americans it backfired. The leadership had to make a lot of statements and they had to shoot it down finally. Now they have even worse relations with China, likely lost votes, and made the US look like an idiot. This is just my opinion. You may disagree.

4- Politicians and some common people who are celebrating the shooting down of the balloon... They are funny. This whole event had to be a non-event. It blew out of proportion because the US media is a reality show and American politics are extremely polarized. Any rationality dies in minutes because of these. Also, politicians and media figures trying to get popular by glorifying the military feels very 3rd world. That usually happens in the third world. Republicans who are doing that are especially funny considering they hate the government otherwise.
