EU sanctions force Serbia to stop Russian oil import.

BELGRADE, June 14. /TASS/. From November 1, Serbia will not be able to import Russian oil due to EU sanctions, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said on Tuesday.

"Dozens of new problems emerge every day <...> We consume 350 tonnes of fuel oil daily, and in winter we will spend seven times more. We need to find fuel oil, there is not enough fuel oil in the NIS (Naftna industrija Srbije - TASS). <...> On November 1, we will no longer be able to import Russian oil under the current sanctions, and God knows what sanctions will be introduced by then," Vucic said.

Earlier, Vucic said that EU sanctions against Russian oil pulled out $600 mln of Serbia’s pocket.

"Only by imposing sanctions on Russian oil, they directly took $600 million from our pocket! $600 million was taken directly from the pockets of Serbian citizens, this is within a year. People in Serbia should know this. Kirkuk, Iraqi oil, is $31 per barrel more expensive. They took $600 million from us, and we still have to invest additional money for gas," Vucic said.

On June 3, the EU Council adopted the sixth package of sanctions against the Russian Federation, including a postponed embargo on maritime supplies of oil and petroleum products from Russia. The ban on sea supplies of oil has been postponed until early December, for oil products - until February 2023. Temporary exemptions from the embargo are provided for imports via oil pipelines for those EU states that, due to their location, are extremely dependent on supplies from Russia and have no alternatives. These are first of all Hungary and Slovakia.

U.S. Army recommends food stamps for soldiers struggling with inflation

The U.S. army is recommending soldiers apply for SNAP benefits, also known as food stamps, to help cover their rising costs from inflation.

The U.S. Army cites the higher prices on a range of goods because of inflation in its recently released official guidance.

“With inflation affecting everything from gas prices to groceries to rent, some Soldiers and their families are finding it harder to get by on the budgets they’ve set and used before,” the guidance written by Sergeant Major of the Army Michael A. Grinston reads. “Soldiers of all ranks can seek guidance, assistance, and advice through the Army’s Financial Readiness Program.”

The guidance points soldiers to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program and links them to the federal welfare program’s website.

“SNAP is a U.S. government program that provides benefits to eligible low-income individuals and families via an electronic benefits transfer card that can be used like a debit card to purchase eligible food in authorized retail food stores. Service members and their families may be eligible,” the Army guidance reads. “To determine qualification, visit the SNAP website or call the SNAP information line at 800-221-5689.”

Food insecurity for troops is not a new problem, but the recent surge in inflation has put service members in an even tougher situation.

“Based on the Pentagon’s own data, 24% of enlisted personnel are food insecure,” said Mackenzie Eaglen, an analyst at the American Enterprise Institute. “While food stamps are a Band-Aid, they’re also an admission that basic pay for enlisted troops and their families is too low – further exacerbated by unyielding inflation causing paychecks to shrink more.”

Federal inflation data released in August shows that food prices have risen fastest since the 1970s.

“The food index increased 10.9 percent over the last year, the largest 12-month increase since the period ending May 1979,” BLS said. “The food at home index rose 13.1 percent over the last 12 months, the largest 12-month increase since the period ending March 1979,” BLS said. “The index for other food at home rose 15.8 percent, and the index for cereals and bakery products increased 15.0 percent over the year. The remaining major grocery store food groups posted increases ranging from 9.3 percent (fruits and vegetables) to 14.9 percent (dairy and related products).”

Eaglen said the answer is to increase pay and be more realistic about how inflation affects service members.

“A better solution is to abandon rosy inflation assumptions, boost basic pay, and request a defense topline above inflation each year so forces and families have predictability and stability,” she said.
“Based on the Pentagon’s own data, 24% of enlisted personnel are food insecure,” said Mackenzie Eaglen, an analyst at the American Enterprise Institute

1/4 US soldiers have trouble affording food. I wonder how concerning this is to the Pentagon lol.

Serbia officially applied to join EU in 2009 (long before the current conflict) most likely for economic reasons. The current Serbian president belongs to Serbia progressive party which is pro European and supports EU accession.
Then, he should stop b...ng about alleged EU's forced unfair play on Serbia with regards to halting the import of Russian oil since he's one of the geniuses who wish to integrate his country into the EU for better economic integration. Being a part of an organization requires certain sacrifices to prove their worth, and right now, Serbia is being told/commanded to follow the EU diktat otherwise he's free to do nothing but not without incurring penalty in return. You can't simply ask to become part of something to reap the benefits and reward but then moan and complain when the very entity you wish to join demand you sacrifice something in return.
