They can spin it as "USN has already deterred China, they have the freedom to conduct safe military exercises in international waters under US supervision". It is still a loss.

Except part of the military exercise overlaps inside Taiwan's 12nm territorial waters. So not international waters, but inside Taiwanese territory <12nm.

I came to the same conclusion. The exercises are a smokescreen, something will happen during these "exercises" but we don't know what, yet.

I think it is important, to see just what happened and people's reaction, is for China to not appear to be as belligerent as the Americans.

If you are a third country like Singapore, who would you rather have for a partner in business? Someone flying off the handle constantly going on the warpath or someone more stable?

That really surprised me. There was no support for this trip. Even there was a rumour that the DDP rescinded the invitation.

They didn't even bother to intercept Pelosi even when they intercept P-8s that fly nowhere close to China. That shows the response planned is something on a different front, to the point where diverting the minimum of 12-20 J11B wasn't considered worth it.

It takes a few days for the military to mobilize, even if they're not going for the entire island but only as far as Penghu.

After this, Beijing has the political support to simply not care about the opinion of Taiwan islanders. Kinmen and Matsu are useful bases to strike at the big Taiwan island.

In all this mess the only thing that amazes me is this : in a population of over a billion CN gov did not find some dudes who can do proper and effective PR to handle this kind of situation. I have said it in the past: incompetence.

I do have to agree with @siegecrossbow that not even an attempted interception is weird. Seriously, it’s not like they were hiding Pelosi plane from public radar either. We all know the PLAAF is more then capable of intercepting warplanes.

I think this is salami slicing with chinese characteristics: if the US is ok with changing the status quo, china will normalize not respecting the territorial claims of ROC. Starting with overflying the strait, military exercises within ROC borders. A proportional response to Pelosi's visit.
