China's transport, tanker & heavy lift aircraft - esp. Y-20/YY-20

Why doesn't the Pla have any interest in acquiring the blueprints for an-22 or an-124? Rather than going through the trouble of developing a new heavy lifter from ground up. Are those Antonovs no good? Just wondering...

They already have Y-20. Why would they want An-124? What's going to power it?

The Chinese used to have a deal with Antonov to manufacture the An-225 in China. But I don't know what happened with that deal.

Too expensive (you're likely going to pay a mid nine digit USD figure for a one off something which a Boeing 747-8F could do most of the same mission).

"An-22" could be typo of "An-225"? I think the OP was wondering if PLA's interested in getting the design docs not the actual airplanes.

don't think An-22 was a typo. He was talking about the largest turbo-propeller driven aircraft.

In my humble opinion, don't see why China need An-225 now. Besides high cost, it requires very long runway for taking off and landing so its military usage would be extremely limited. Actually USSR built it just for space shuttle transporting.

Supposedly it's for aerodynamics. I wonder how much this + the removal of the ramp would improve fuel economy and whether it would get close to that of a tanker designed from the ground up as a tanker

May not be for fuel economy. Could just be a way to manage wake effects for tailing aircraft.

Nobody seems sure about status of AN-225, but one thing for sure: CR929 is a question mark now. Original plans called for Western engines, and a considerable amount of western content. I had always assumed China and Russia would somehow fall out over this project, or on some other issue. Could China take it forward without Russia's involvement? Could Russia, somehow, remain quietly involved in the programme?

Russian involvement is definitely dead. Any hint of russian involvement will invite western embargoes.

Best thing that could happen is Russia sells key engine and composite tech to china. Then at least they'd get some cash injection.
