mens 800m freestyle and womens 1500m freestyle are new Olympics events for swimming this year.
Sun Yang at his peak performance, competed in 200m, 400m and 1500m, just because 800m was not available. 200m freestyle was not really his strong event.

200m not his strongest but he is still very strong. World class standards definitely, especially when he transitioned to shorter distances.

Yep a pity 800m wasn't included during his peak years, it's included in the world championship though, no question he would have more Olympic gold medals, he was unbeatable at these distances. However we have to consider at later stages of his career when he specialized at shorter distances of 200 and 400m, his 1500m times suffered. It's extremely hard to be world class at all 200/400/800/1500m.

Also before his time, there was zhang lin and he probably could medal too with in 800m.

Imagine having the nerve to say this. Like bitch the only reason America even tops the table is because of padding medals in Swimming.
NYT is truly a rag paper .

Swimming is padded with the most medals and it is a sport not accessible to poorer countries. US has rigged the Olympics in their favour through swimming.

Well, at least their women's hockey team qualified for the Tokyo Olympics. Non of the other Asian countries qualified for this event.

Boy do I remember dozens of these same exact articles from Western media in 2008 when China won the most golds. When China wins, they're either cheating or they were forced through cruel conditions. When the West wins, it was through their freedom.

Yeah The west have long denigrated and demonized China Olympics state program and training. Goes a long way, so much so regular fans are brainwashed to think it's very evil and outdated. I'm following tennis and saddens me to see comments bashing China, I think I can accept valid criticism and in china's tennis program there may be some truth in it that seems like it doesn't work well but i cannot accept those from hongkong cock roaches making it all political so now I'm avoiding tennis forums lol.

Arrrghn Chinese women's volley ball so close 5 setter, unfortunately lost in the end. It's all academic now I believe, China will not progress to next stage. Lost first three matches, They have Italy next strong opponent. In group of death, with Russia, US, Italy, turkey you have to bring your A game from the start but with zhu Ting injury it makes it hard.


Annoying thing is they had such a huge lead in the 4th like 20-14 but could not close it out

They need to reform the volleyball system. Why is mens volleyball always so crappy?

Agree. I really don't want to complain about this. China can't say we want to be crowned the most athletic nation with the most gold medals but be bad at running, jumping and swimming. That's bullcrap. (But then again, it's also bullcrap when these Caucasian nations use black athletes to win.) Get better at these things or you don't deserve the crown.

Swimming is an very expensive sport.

Those Olympic-sized pools (never seen one in my entire life) is over DOUBLE the size of a standard college/university pool. Costs a ton of money. Olympic-sized pools are HUGE and not many highschools, colleges, or even nations can afford to build them in large numbers.

China is getting richer though, it's a sport it definitely can easily improve upon.
